I was very interested in the reading topics because they were not like anything I have read in my high school English classes. From Bell Hooks article, “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor,” that discusses the negative representations of the poor to Gillam and Wooden’s article, “Post Princess Models of Gender: The New Man in Disney/Pixar,” that discusses the change in masculinity, I have become familiar with changes in America that might not directly effect me, but effect the people around me. I now know why Mattel, the company that makes Barbie, is coming out with a line of different shaped and colored Barbie dolls; the skinny blonde haired, blue eyed Barbie was a negative role model. All three topics involve negative stereotypes and the effect they have on people, which really caught my attention. I am inspired to read more so I can learn about other popular issues in today 's time. By responding to these articles, I was able to examine what is important to me, and a lot of the articles were. Critically reading these articles expanded my thinking skills and led me to look closer into subjects in order get a better insight on them. I am happy that English 101 was my first college class because with the critical reading skills I have learned, I feel better prepared to take on the next four years. I have learned important factors about structure
