There is an avalanche of English Learners arriving in Americans schools each year. Teachers around the country must use many strategies to help these students learn the curriculum, as well as the new language. Literacy is the key component for this learning to happen. Although teachers are usually the biggest literary influence ELL students will have, parent participation is an essential component to develop children’s passion for literacy. Unfortunately, many ELL parents do not feel comfortable participating in school activities, or even helping their children with homework because of the language barrier. With that in mind, we created “English Learners Story Night Reading Buddies.” This is a fun, extra school activity, in which ELL families will come to school in the evening to read books with their children and participate in literary activities. The specific activity that will be done in our college classroom is guided towards second grade students. Knowing that many parents do not speak English, the books provided will be multilingual. Thus, they should be more involved and read with their children often. As a result of this event, ELL parents should also understand that reading should be enjoyable in order to foster good lifelong reading habits. Therefore, making reading a fun activity should be the best approach. Most importantly, we hope that the biggest outcome is that ELL parents realize that language barrier shouldn’t prevent them from engaging in reading with their children.
