English Language Learners Analysis

Assessing early literacy for English Language Learners is a way for teachers to make decisions in their instructions. Assessments help teachers know if the child is at risk for delays in literacy and learn about what children know and can do. When thinking of assessments, some teachers often use standards as guidelines. “Early childhood teachers often intertwine standards, instruction, and assessment. While it is important for the parents to understand the assessment, it is also equally important that child understands. The teacher will need to learn about the child’s culture, previous education, family and language spoken at home. “It is critical for early childhood teachers to recognize that English Language Learners come from very different literacy backgrounds.” (Schulz, 2009) Different types of writing assessments teachers can use for ELL children includes self-assessment checklist, writing conferences and portfolios.
