Assessing early literacy for English Language Learners is a way for teachers to make decisions in their instructions. Assessments help teachers know if the child is at risk for delays in literacy and learn about what children know and can do. When thinking of assessments, some teachers often use standards as guidelines. “Early childhood teachers often intertwine standards, instruction, and assessment. State literacy standards and assessment practices often help teachers pinpoint instructional decisions for students.” (Schulz, 2009) For example, when planning an instruction or using assessments for English Language Learners in literacy, teachers like to use the state standards to help them. While it is important for the parents to understand the assessment, it is also equally important that child understands. The teacher will need to learn about the child’s culture, previous education, family and language spoken at home. “It is critical for early childhood teachers to recognize that English Language Learners come from very different literacy backgrounds.” (Schulz, 2009) Different types of writing assessments teachers can use for ELL children includes self-assessment checklist, writing conferences and portfolios. The purpose of these assessments is to understand the child’s current progress in writing. Based on the ELL child’s current skills in writing, it is important to encourage the student to write in how they are comfortable writing. Some children write in their native language, or some will find themselves mixing their native language and English when writing. For reading there also includes many different assessments that can be given for ELL children.
