English has never been a strong suit of mine. Why Siena Heights placed me in English 102 will always be a mystery to me. English 102 is a class designed to teach students how to think critically, communicate effectively, and show effective use of technology. This is done through the study of summaries, grammar and sentence mechanics, argumentative practices, and structural development. This course is effective in teaching these objectives due to the clarity of the information presented, the personality of the teacher, and the types of assignments that were assigned. Aubrey Crosby was my teacher for English 102. Throughout the course of the semester we were taught how to write summaries, paraphrases, critiques, and research essays. These assignments taught the students how to effective communicate the information that was expressed in other articles. It also teaches students how to not plagiarize by requiring them to have citations for their information. The way the information was presented, the personality of Crosby, and the variety of assignments made this course effective in …show more content…
Nearly every day of class, depending on how we behaved, Crosby told the class her joke of the day. She was always laid back and nice to her students. There was only a few times throughout the semester when she got upset with her class for being too off task. Although Ms. Crosby has a laid back personality, she can be unorganized at times. For example, she forgot when the final exam essay was due. Also, at times when she is writing notes she will be all over the board and cross things out to write something else. This made it hard sometimes because the student’s notes would be all over the place too. Crosby was unorganized at times, however, it was not to an extreme extent where it effected how the class was taught and how the information was

My revision of “Face it, America!” that follows this cover letter reflects what I have learned in English 1021 so far. While revising this essay, I learned when to use present tense in my writing and past tense in my writing when appropriate. In this class, I have learned to use more transitions and appropriate transitions in my writing. My revision reflects this because in my second paragraph where I mention the significance of police officers, I use transition words for every new sentence that needs it.…

Do the English that is spoken at home while growing up have any effect on how well you performed in school or around your community? I grew up in Los Angeles, CA in a low-income area that was infested with a lot of gang activities, criminal activities, and drug related activities. Growing up in this type of environment I was accustomed to speaking improper English also know as slang. Talking and writing improper English was common for me in an everyday situation for example when communicating with friends even family members I would open up with what's up instead of answering with hello how are you doing. Throughout high school improper English would transition into my schoolwork, instead of writing I am, I would've wrote I is.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Throughout English Composition 1, I have learned several crucial writing skills. Writing skills that will benefit me in other classes, outside of school, and during my future college years. Not only will these benefit my overall writing and making it flow better, it will all in all make more sense to the readers. Even though I learned many skills and objectives during this semester, four skills really stood out to me. Cohesion, comma usage, the use of satire, and how to write a definitional essay.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
