Social media is an electronic world containing applications with new forms of communication and expression through posts and, in this case, tweets. Twitter is a social media site that lets users post 140 character statuses, called tweets, to express themselves on the internet. The main purpose of Twitter is to make your own posts, as well as see what others are writing. “Twitter users connect by becoming followers of one another. This concept is similar to becoming ‘friends’ on other social media websites, such as Facebook. Users can follow acquaintances, businesses, celebrities, politicians, or even random strangers on Twitter” (“Twitter”, 2014, p.2). Having helpful functions within the app to keep you busy and entertained can make it stand above the rest. Unlike many applications, twitter has different posting options. Instead of only giving you the choice to post statuses or pictures, you have the possibility to post both. This makes it an enjoyable application for teenagers to have because they are not always seeing the same thing when they go on their account. This also eliminates the need for more multiple social media applications for parents to watch over and keep track of. Another very important aspect of Twitter is that it is not anonymous. With a hidden identity, teens tend to have more confidence and post hateful things they would not normally say. “Formspring and Ask.fm, where users take advantage of anonymity to send abuse, deliver more upsetting, embarrassing, and frightening experiences than Twitter” (Binns, A., 2014, p.7). In comparison, Twitter leads to more positive outcomes because users have to take responsibility for their actions and posts. The app is enjoyable for children, as well as easy to watch over for adults. Unlike many of today’s applications, Twitter provides a safe, fun environment for teenagers to express themselves and appreciate the expression of others as well. This is an app highly recommended for children of apprehensive parents unsure of the benefits of social media. With the Twitter application, parents can find peace with their children sharing their opinions in a safe, fun environment.
