How to become a better English Student

Have you ever wondered how you’re going to do in a class and the result you end up with? Well that’s my exact thought when signing up for English 111. I had already taken this course once and things didn’t go as well as I thought they would. I started off pretty good and knew I was going to pass, but at the end of the semester I guess me and the teacher had a different outlook on how well I did. Let’s just say English is not my favorite subject and has never been. I knew the second time taken it, I had to do better and that was my ultimate goal for English 111 this semester. This semester has shown me that I need to stay more focused, come to class and not procrastinate. Those are the three

I personally think I have progressed in writing conventions. Such as my spelling, grammar and punctuation. Those are the most important things when writing. Not only writing conventions but writing research as well. For example, we had to include our research in the argumentative essay. Some people think that writing research only plays a part with research papers, but if you look at it every paper other than a reflection essay has some type of research you’ve included. One area that I we always used and I hated to include in essay was the meal plan. That’s all we heard this semester was use the meal plan. I have a good understanding of it just hate to try to include it in a paper or structure the paper in the meal plans order. I never could use the meal plan exactly the way some professor taught it. I honestly have my own style of how I write papers and essays and the meal plan always confuses me when trying to include it. There are always processes many use to progress in certain assignments that need to be done. For example when we wrote our first pre-test essay, it wasn’t much to it but just writing off the top of your head. Which is easy because you’re just able to write without a specific structure you’re asked to use. Then there’s the papers that need more of a structure process. For example we worked on many rhetorical analysis but I personally think that the argumentative essay use a better process. As far starting with an outline and conducting research. For my argumentative essay I first completed my outline. The outline really helped because it helps you get an idea of the paper will be structured. After finishing the outline you’re ready to put your paper together. You basically have each part of your paper you just have to put it together and figure of where each paragraph should be placed. Of course after completing the paper then

Accelerated English 4 has been a class that has been one of my best English classes. The class taught me many new techniques along with improving my skills that I already knew, though not all were improved. My strength in vocabulary was still as high as it was while my ability to transition had improved quite well, though my ability to create a well styled paper was still suffering. When Accelerated English 4 started there was no excitement about the papers I would have to write.…

A few months ago, when I was still in high school as a Senior I was placed in an AP English course because of the program I was in. The program placed all the students in the course regardless of if they were considered AP English ready. During the course, there were over several writing assignments, each on novels or quotes. However, my teacher kept informing me that my writing needs to improve to reach the college level. Yet I continued to complete assignments without understanding the mistakes, simply to earn the grade for because I turned an essay in.…

able to me as an incoming freshman, I have come to the conclusion that I would like to enroll in English 100. As I looked at the characteristics in the boxes in the “Guide to Choosing the Right First-Year Writing Course” for English 100 and English 100P, I find that I fulfill almost all of the characteristics for English 100. For the reasons stated throughout this essay, I believe this course would be best suited for me in my first year as a college freshman. English 100, which is offered for three hours a week, will allow me more time to evenly apportion study opportunities for each of my classes. Although the English 100P course provides students with lab time for essays and writing samples, I would prefer to work on my own and use one…

When I first started the rhetoric, inquiry and critical writing course I was unaware of the specific flaws in my writing assignments. During this course not only did I figure out my own style of writing, but I also learned about other writing styles and how I could incorporate them into my own writing. The constructive criticism given by my peers and professor improved my way of writing. The hardest obstacle I had to face while writing was staying on topic. I gave too much information about a general topic instead of focusing on a small portion and brainstorming from there.…

During these past nine weeks, my English skills have improved in my writing, my reading, and my speaking. Some goals that I have for the remaining of the school year include participating more in class, reading more life-changing stories, and mastering the art of writing elaborate essays. In class, I enjoy listening more than I like speaking out loud. I believe that if I try to immerse myself into the lesson, I will be able to learn a lot more than if I just sit in my chair and try to finish my homework in class so I do not have to do it at home.…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…

In the beginning, I looked at the different ways of preparing for a paper and one stuck out to me. I would write an outline of what I wanted to write about and then I would make sub-headings under each bulletin describing what each topic would talk about. I used this process more with my research papers than with the narrative essays because I could see what facts I needed to look up and which ones I already knew. For the non-research essays, I wrote the first sentence to every paragraph first. After that I would write an outline of what I wanted to talk about in each paragraph.…

If I was writing a paper that required a specific number of paragraphs or pages I would typically plan my paper using the four square method. If I was writing an important paper I would write a rough draft, then as I was typing it I would revise it and fix any mistakes I found. One thing that remained consistent in my writing process, no matter the type of paper, is after I wrote the paper I would try to find more grade level appropriate words instead of the simple words I originally used. While writing essays for this class I came to find it is better to combine my writing processes to write the best possible essay I could. I found the best steps for me to take in writing my paper are to write my ideas down in some form.…

The writing process is different and unique to all individuals; many people follow the ideal steps of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing as opposed to others taking shortcuts, skipping steps, and going straight to editing. The writing process is the course one takes to get from prewriting to the publication of their essay; since everyone is a different, their writing process will also be different. For me, I believe that following the ideal writing process steps are a tremendous help to organizing my essay and spacing out the work throughout the time the assignment is assigned. To begin writing an essay I must first prewrite; to prewrite is to brainstorm ideas from the prompt by outlining, diagramming, clusterings, or…
