When I first made my decision to go to Hudson Valley to study Computer Information Systems I was shown the classes which I need to complete to earn my degree. One of the classes I would have to take as a requirement was English Composition I. And so my decision to begin taking the class this semester has already begun to have effects on my writing ability and in particular my grammar. However grammar and general writing improvements are not the only things that this class will effect. For it has already begun to effect what classes I can and will take in the future. First and foremost one thing I have notice changing in my writing is my grammar. I’ve started to make an effort to shorten my sentences. In addition I’ve also learned what holes to look for in my writing due to the self-analysis that I explored while writing my self-narrative. This coupled with the grammar worksheets we have been working on outside have class have allowed me to become more aware of my grammar mistakes, and it has allowed me to know how to correct them. However as I am still a student and thus still learning it will probably be a tad bit ironic as I miss some grammar mistakes in …show more content…
For starters once I complete English Composition I I’ll be able to move on to English Composition II to fulfill the second English requirement for my degree. In addition in the future I plan to take two history courses while I attend Hudson Valley. During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

I believe, that I ready to enter English 1101, I have numerous reasons for believing this. I will describe my reasons in a brief analysis, in this essay. The first obvious reason being that, College English is not like high school English. There is far more assistance that is offered to the students, with the writing and constructing their papers. Take for example the writing assistance given by the SSU Writing Center, as well as the Library and English conferences and even Feedback given by fellow college students.…

The barrier language that I have between Hmong and English is what makes my writing difficult to understand from the start of the school year, not only that, but also just me trying to throughly write an explanation of what I have thought of in mind. Sometimes it doesn’t come out on the paper as I have, have in my thoughts. Which in return create flaws in my level one, two, or three writing paper that affect my writing skills. The flaws that I have slightly improve on my writing: create a clear and stronger thesis statement, subject- verb agreement, and transitioning. Constructing a firm claim and allowing the reader to be able to identify which position I’ve take through my writing by creating a rough draft of what I am going to say in…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

Throughout English Composition 1, I have learned several crucial writing skills. Writing skills that will benefit me in other classes, outside of school, and during my future college years. Not only will these benefit my overall writing and making it flow better, it will all in all make more sense to the readers. Even though I learned many skills and objectives during this semester, four skills really stood out to me. Cohesion, comma usage, the use of satire, and how to write a definitional essay.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
