Thank you for all of your support, for pushing me to be the best student, athlete, and person that I can be. Although you yell at me for my grades sometimes, I know you are just trying to make to a better student and work harder. I may not appreciate it now, but I am sure I will in the long run. You helped me realize, everything in life isn’t handed to you, and you helped me see that. While I am getting the time to thank you, thank you for putting up with me and my crazy softball life. You don’t have to travel across the country ten times or more a year just to watch me play, but you do it anyways… and the little things like driving 40 minutes to practice twice a week and a tournament on the weekends. This year we have been focusing on finding a claim in a story and supporting it with evidence, while reading historical literature. I struggle with comprehending what I read, and with the amount of reading we do I have been doing my best to study and read twice and think about what I read in order to succeed on the quizzes we take, and do well on the worksheets we turn in. Although I am not the best reader, I am good at writing in general. This semester we had a creative writing assignment and an essay for a story we read over a couple or weeks. Another strength is my ability to find a claim and support it with evidence. We have really been focusing on that skill in this class and I noticed I am doing the worksheets with ease. A positive experience I have had was noticing how hard I can push myself to read a piece of literature that I don’t necessarily want to read. The story we read was very long, and I missed a lot of days that we worked on the story, so I had to catch up. I read and did my work efficiently using time management skills to catch up to the class in a quick amount of

How would one describe the normal student? Solely base it off of the student’s physical features and life styles, or the student’s political stand point? My Concerns about ESL 51 I think this course has had a good start for us since we began our two classes so far by writing two paragraphs in limited time which was about thirty minutes. I have some concerns in this class. To begin with, writing in the class most of the time is challenging for me specially if I have a limited time and no permission to use any dictionary for translating Farsi to English. So I become nervous and try to focus on the time and not my writing.…

Made it through another semester This semester I learned that some of us read and write more then we think we on a daily basis. There are different ways of reading and writing outside of the classroom. After we did the reading and writing journals earlier this semester I noticed that I read more then I write in my free time and for class, like text, social media, ESPN updates, books, and flyers.…

On the 1st day of AP English class all you heard was the clock barely ticking, sweat coming off of the teacher forehead and the students taking out paper and writing utensils to take notes on what we need. What stood out was Mrs. Fantroy’s strong voice along with the books that were shown for everyone to read that semester. The books looked like they could have come from out of ancient tombs or something. She had at least two lengthy looking books. She stated, “These are just some books for you guys to read just this semester.…

Vocabulary Test “Admonish the interlopers who vehemently despair over their plight of…” blasphemy. This confusing, jumbled sentence represents the vocabulary units as a whole , this school year. Although we, students, may understand these words now, their significance in this course is not as understood. Out of the 140 words we have learned this year, there were less than five on the AP exam: “choleric, vicarious, urbane, etc.”…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

Ms. Fox's college English class is hard because it’s a lot of work. A lot of work means multiple things to do each week such as reading and writing every week for the entire semester. According to Fox's syllabus, students can expect about 4 hours of homework each week. Four hours for one class is a lot because students may have other classes and jobs each week. Juggling and making time to do the work is what makes the class hard.…

As I first walked into classroom W3 to begin my first day of class in Freshman Composition, I could not help the nervous feeling in my gut. I have always gotten away with writing papers at the las minute, and I could tell right away that I would not be able to do that in this class. Although the instructor seemed nice enough, I was still nervous about all of the work outside of the classroom required. Despite the feeling in my gut, I still set lofty goals for the class, most of which revolved around receiving an “A” in the class.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

This section was all about adding rigorous material into the classroom. They define rigor as challenging material but also it is material that helps the students struggle. I think the best way to use this in a classroom is to not use it every day. I agree with the having kids struggle is one of the ways to help them grow and challenge their thinking skills. If you have students that have not fully developed their critical thinking skills, they will struggle.…

After and absent of almost two years, this is my first quarter in Berkeley, and is Online. When selecting classes I kind of look which one I would like to have, and this class was one of my first option -second to my statistics class because that one I could not change at all! This class had helped me a lot, so much, that even when I know I still make a lot of mistakes, I’m sure they are less than I used to do when I first started this course.…
