Immigrants who do not speak English as their first language should be required to learn English. Not knowing English creates natural barriers in which information that is not properly interpret can potential cause death of a person. Asking our law enforcement personnel and medical personnel that are on the streets to learn every language that is spoken in this nation is unrealistic. People who come to this country should be given a timeline to learn this language. The system to help immigrants learn English is already established, there are many adult schools, community programs, and colleges such as Rio Hondo that offer English as a Second Language (ESL) so making it mandatory would only help this situation. Also, when it comes to the workplace, many of the hazards and safety precautions are in English and without knowing the meaning of some of this warning, it cannot only result in serious injuries of the person but also others. Learning English will open the doors for many immigrants for the opportunities that this country has to offer.
Many immigrants who come to the U.S for the freedom and may not be fluent in English but find ways to become successful. This does not happen very often but it is possible. This is the beauty of leaving in this country, it opens up the door for all. Knowing English only helps speed up the process.

Carlene Carmichael, in “Teach Them Spanish Early, Too”, argues that Americans in California should be taught Spanish at a young age. Carmichael supports her argument by saying that young Americans should have the chance to learn basic Spanish (reading and writing) and learn together with other children who speak and know Spanish. She also says those who learn Spanish will have a greater opportunity to compete for jobs that require both languages. Therefore, Carmichael asserts that Americans who do not speak Spanish are at a disadvantage because some jobs require them to speak Spanish.…

All over the world, people have stereotypes that dehumanize a certain group of people. The government can do all they want to make a certain group of people to be valued more than others. Society has valued or made to value lighter skin as prettier and better. People have privileges that others don 't have just by the way they look. For example, in our class discussion we had many examples about how young children were given the task to describe two dolls a white and a black one and everyone said good things about the white one but not for the black doll.…

The longer the United States refuses to constitute an official language, the more taxes the American citizens pay. Citizens of America must not remain responsible to pay for those who speak another language, for it is unfair to tax members of society who take pride in knowing their country’s founding language. Reducing government spending in America is in the best interest of our country and American citizens. With the United States trillions of dollars in debt, America should do anything…

Languages: Are fewer actually better? In his article, “Why English should be the official language of the United States”, well known columnist, Brandon Brice (2014), argues how an official language would enhance immigrants to learn the language, while improving immigrants’ and American’s lives. The author highlights how not having an official language has negatively affected the country, consequences that are intensifying, as immigration rates continue to increase. In addition, such immigrants are not feeling the necessity to learn English, especially Spanish speakers who are instead spreading their language.…

America is known as the land of the immigrants and is well-known for being considered a melting pot, therefore having diversity and different cultures mixed in one nation. Obviously with so much diversity of races and culture there is also a diversity of languages being brought into America. Many Americans do not accept the idea of America being a bilingual nation because they believe they were in America first and they grew up speaking English but another majority of the population believe that being bilingual is useful and can help America grow in many ways. America is not only known for being the land of the immigrants but it is also known for being the land of the free. In other words, for giving the people the liberty to speak whatever language they please.…

It is argued that immigrants should have to assimilate to the culture of the new country they are migrating to rather than not assimilating and going about their daily lives the way they normally do. However, not very many people discuss the ways in which immigrants can learn how to assimilate and what assimilating in entails. Learning the language of the new country is just one step in integrating into that country, along with becoming a citizen and the steps that come with it, and getting any documents you may need for that country. Along with German, Spanish, Italian, French, and Dutch, English is one of the easiest languages to learn.…

Many people think that English is the official language of the United States but think again. The United States does not have an official language. Immigrants came to the United States from different countries, speaking their native tongue and over time, English became the dominant language of the United States. Making English the official language of the United States will help bring people together, and it will motivate immigrants to assimilate to their adopted country and learn the new language. Making English the official language of the United States goes back to 1780, when future president John Adams felt that English should be the national language.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay.
