English analysis essay
For my analysis essay I chose both a poem and a song. I chose Invictus, a poem by William E. Henley, and “This is me”, an original song from the upcoming movie The Greatest Showman, performed by Keala Settle.
Both the song and the poem revolve around the idea that, no matter what life throws at you, no matter what other people say, no matter what happens, you can choose to keep going and hold your head up. You are the master of your fate and the captain of your soul. I will show you the similarities as well as analyze them.
In Invictus, the line “Out of the night that covers me-“, is a metaphor for emotional darkness, such as a hard time in life, depression, sadness, anger, or confusion, and to say that you are coming …show more content…
is understood by the speaking character or writer, and they are clearly stating their own familiarity with the supposed darkness.
Another metaphor located in Invictus can be found in the line “-Under the bludgeonings of chance, my head is bloody but unbowed.”
In Invictus, you can clearly see the verbal patterns, or meters, in the repeating sounds made in the lines. An example comes from the lines “Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul” These can be found throughout both the song and the poem, in multiple areas, although more can be seen in the song.
In “This is Me”, you see a lot of repetition in the lyrics, mostly located in the chorus, but in lines leading up to the chorus as well. This is especially obvious in the oh’s in the chorus and background of the song. There is a fair amount of sound repetition in Invictus as well.
In the line “Black as the Pit-“ it is being compared to the Pit, and although it doesn’t elaborate on the subject, it is an obvious simile being used
