Reflective Essay: Moving To The United States

Writing an English academical essay was not always an easy task for me since I am used to telling my stories in a border or narrow sense because of some cultural and linguistic differences from English. I always started by writing the essay to myself and I often don’t think about the reader been someone else, I wrote as I am writing a letter to myself or a personal journal, making the essay too specific or too general. For instance, my favorite question to begin writing was, “why am I writing about this subject” or “which information about this subject I need to mention”. These questions often lead me to answer them to myself, which is a little selfish to the reader whom may get lost on my essay or even worst get confused about some of the …show more content…
For example, on the introduction of my first essay “living on a Minimum Wage” I wrote, “Before moving to the United States, I was so impressed with the western lifestyle that I started watching American movies and music video clips. I started dreaming about being in the United States one day, so I could finish my education and go back to my country Chad to start a good life and be around my family and friends. However, I did not anticipate what I had to do financially to survive in the United States”(1). Not only this introduction is too short but is also brief. As soon I started working on the paper, my mind was raising to the body paragraph where I put most of my effort and focus instead of providing more information on the introduction. But after getting a feedback from the professor, I promise to myself to always proportion the time that I spend on writing and improve the number of words to be at least 200 or more as it was mentioned in the book and also by Mr. Christopher Jone my English professor. I made a little improvement in every essay introduction that I wrote since then, not only on the word count but also on providing more information on the …show more content…
I often finish with the essay as soon as I am done typing it, or sometimes I maybe just read the paper once and submitted it. For instance, on my second paper “Marketing Strategies” I wrote about The Mall of America and American consumerism. I mentioned, “In today 's lifestyle many people are obsessed with materials things and spending. To gets spenders or materialist people to the mall, businesses usually choose to distinguish their business from others and get those consumers in....”(2). Looking back to this sentence I think I could do better if I just put some time and effort proofreading it. However after this essay, I started proofreading my essays before submitting it or show it to anybody. Proofreading helped me a lot capturing my grammatical and punctuation mistakes. Before proofreading, I just type any idea that comes to mind and after just go back read it again and again to fix the error that I catch. I think proofreading made me a better writer, Not only capturing mistakes but also understanding the subject that I am writing about and if I am on the right truck or

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…
