English 2050: Independent Study

Decent Essays
I am writing to you because I am one semester away from graduating and need English 2050: Intro to Literary Theory & Criticism. I was enrolled in the class in Spring 2017 but the class was cancelled due to lack of interest. Advising has informed me that I can take the class as an independent study as long as there is a teacher willing to guide me. Please advise on what is required of me to complete this class.

If you cannot (or do not) take this assessment at the scheduled time, you need to see Mr. Alper (in room 415) as soon as possible to make arrangements to take the assessment at an alternate time. Your admittance to this course will be based on this writing assessment and your performance and conduct in your previous English classes, particularly your current one, which will be determined by your teacher’s recommendation (relative to other students) in addition to your grade. Please be aware that the AP English Language course entails far more reading, debating, discussion, and writing than any previous English class you have taken, along with composing in several forms (e.g., narrative, expository, analytical, and argumentative essays) on a variety of subjects. If you find any of these aspects of the course unappealing and something you envision being unhappy about, this is probably not the right course for you.…

English in college has been a very different class from what was described throughout the Calverton School experience. The readings themselves are similar to the International Baccalaureate program that I faced in high school; however the writing style which has been introduced is still somewhat foreign. The understanding for writing which I was accustomed to in high school has become blurred and foggy; it seems inadequate for this class. The realization that academic writing does not exclusively revolve around a set structure, such as a five paragraph essay, was difficult to accept; and continues to plague my writing. From a perspective standpoint, what has truly changed is the approach to writing is that writing is not trying to always…

Dear Professor Edwards, Last semester, I was a student at Colorado State University. I did not take English 121; however, I did take a class like it called Composition 130. Composition 130 was a great class that allowed me to transition easily from high school writing to college writing. I felt discouraged coming into the class at the beginning, but my writing improved tremendously after being in the class. The class was beneficial to me in several ways.…

Artist Statement At the start of the semester, entering English 416, I felt very nervous and unworthy of being in the class. I was intimidated by great writers who wrote so easily and who I don’t doubt will be published authors someday. This course was my first upper level English class and I felt unqualified as the class felt like a whole different ballgame…

Over the past three months, class ENC1101 has taught me some major lessons in English writing. My expectation coming into this class was to become a better writer, at least in my eyes. The different writing assignments were helpful to me using research and asking questions when I was stuck. My progression has included me writing essays, MLA format as well as discussing classmate’s papers, and becoming open to others criticisms about my work. Most importantly I have learned how important English is.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

Prior to English 101, I have been taking several English classes, but each class helped me little by little to an English 101 student. Learning to have efficient studying habits such as study the day of the class and not doing things last minute. Also learning how to actually study other subjects and how to think critically. This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

The history of the movement to declare English as the official language has been a long and uphill battle. An amendment was proposed to Congress; however, the amendment of the official language never made it out of the committee.
