The use of technology in classrooms today can be somewhat beneficial towards today’s youth, yet it can also have a very dark side. For example, we can just pick up a phone and simply say, “Google, what year was The University of South Alabama established?” and Google would answer with, “The University of South Alabama was founded in 1964.” within seconds. It’s beneficial because if someone needs to know the answer to something quickly it can come in handy; however, it can come off as lazy; therefore modern-day technology is taking away, what should be, our common traits.…

Abstract: In “Into the Electronic Millennium”, Sven Birkerts lays down his central arguments that the introduction of electronic communications are fundamentally changing-and will continue to change-the way that the world works. He focuses on explaining how the assumptions behind reading printed text and electronic text are different, and the visible symptoms in our society. By looking at 3 examples of literary figures as they interact with and utilize the electronic word, he provides acute analysis of different effects that electronic communications are different than print. Birkerts only explains what he sees to be the changes and looks towards the future to hypothesize about other possible effects, without specifically suggesting any changes to be made.…

The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr is an informational novel about the effects the internet has on us. As a writer, Carr focuses on technology and culture. He has written various essays, blog posts, and other novels before The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains. Carr covers various topics such as our shortened attention span, which leads to our inability to read lengthy articles and books, supplementary information to solidify his arguments, and how media has changed to follow this shift in informative medium. I believe Carr’s purpose for writing this novel was to explore and to incite a necessary conversation about our heavily technology-dependent culture.…

The story that I want to share is, the basic yet often talked about transition, between high school and college. High school was so much easier for me back then, you could get away with so much more and not worried about homework as much. Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college.…

Mark Bauerlein, author of The Dumbest Generation, argues in his controversial novel that America's rapidly developing technology and our growing dependence on it is destroying the minds of our youth. He alleges that today’s youth are losing the ability to think, as we slowly rely more and more on the comforts of computerized algorithms to think for ourselves. Despite my own biased view of Bauerleins viewpoints from the perspective as a literate and well-worded 16 year old living in an arguably virtual world, Bauerlein has some merit, but his perception of what intellect is, and isn’t is veiled, and his own biased maturity is questionable. It is an obvious allegation that technology has a great deal of influence on the lives of students.…
