Reflective Essay In my English 111 class I had Mrs. Sykes and I experience a lot of changes while being in her class. For example; how I developed myself as a student, my expectations of college changed and my type of writing also has changed. Thanks to Mrs. Sykes now I know a lot of academic information that I can apply to my next classes in the future. I as well learned what type of writing I will perform in those classes. I also learn how I will use writing communication in my future carrier. I enjoyed and learned a lot in her class.
When I first started her class I was so nervous because even though this was my second time taking English 111, the experiences are different and also the instructors are. The first few writing assignments we had in class were hard for me because I was not sure what her grading would be based on other than grammatically. I had trouble witting my first paragraph because of the grammatical issues and I was not used to looking for tutoring. I used to write my papers without any help from professional writers and that affected my grade. I also had a lot of problems with commas and writing in correct English. English is my second language and that made my writing assignments more difficult.

But, she made everything so clear and always had time for the class and understood our problems and she always tried to help us solve them. I also expected that I was going to struggle more than I actually did. I did have trouble but not how I expected I would have. I was the type of writer were I would just start writing in a blank paper without any type of organization. Outlines used to confuse me a lot but the way the instructor explain it really got my questions clear. The fact that I learned how to properly make an outline helped me to make my writing better and

For this assignment I decided to interview my English 111 professor; Michelle Christensen. I chose her because she is the type of person I want to be when I grow up. She is very outgoing, advanced and passionate about her work. She considers her leadership style to be similar to that of a transformational leader, who revolves around collaboration with students and working in reciprocity to one another. Throughout this interview, I not only learnt about a new leadership style, but I learnt a lot about my professor.…

English 1101 has been very helpful so far. I have learned that I definitely have things to work on while writing formal papers. I also have learned that I should take extra time when looking over my papers before hitting the submit button. I think the biggest challenge really is working full time and going to school full time. I think it is difficult to balance the amount of school work I have to with the time that I have when I am not at work.…

During my junior year at Stephen Decatur High School, I was enrolled in American Literature with Mrs. Moore. At first I thought she was a hard teacher because she made us write a lot. I enjoyed writing creative pieces, but in her class she gave us a prompt or we had to analyze a text and prove how the author believed in the American Dream or not. The first essay we wrote I scored a 29 out of 30 and was proud of myself because English has not always been my strongest subject. Our next assignment was on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

As a young child at school, we had the Accelerated Reading Program. It was a program that encouraged children to read various books, and then after to take a quiz based on the books. This program really helped me, because the program pushed me to read more. Since I am bilingual, learning two languages as a child was a bit challenging for me, and learning how to read was even harder. I would sometimes mix up letters, vowels, and sometimes talk in Russian when I was supposed to talk in English.…

Based on my prior experience in honors english for two years, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature, English 101 honors is the best fit for my experience and my level of meticulous and strategic writing at this point. Writing and reading have always come easy to me in school; whether reading to write a book review for the class or reading for the AP exam, I have excelled with high honors and the highest remarks from the faculty on my writing and style. English has always been one of my best subjects. Most of my english teachers were pretty impressed with my writing skills and with my advanced vocabulary for my age. My 9th grade english teacher even thought that I should get into writing, whether as a blogger or as an journalist.…

I think that the biggest problem was her teaching style that I wasn’t acclimated to. It was just really strange to not have a day of lecture, but all we did was get lengthy reading assignments and criticism on the work we had done. We’d nearly spend half an hour listening to her lecture the other students in the class that weren’t academically inspired about how they needed to increase their activity in and outside of class, which I found to be a waste of valuable time and very frustrating. I wanted to learn and better my skills because I wanted to ace the exam, but I felt I was held back by my own teacher. I always believed that the teachers needed to give lectures and provide help, but the mindset was to go get your own help or fail.…

Writing an essay about my experience as a writer and how I feel when I write. I thought should be a breeze until, I received my grade back. It was not a horrible grade, nor what I was expecting. When reading the teacher’s comment “While you did write your response in several paragraphs, it isn 't fully a reflective essay. To be an essay, it must include an introduction paragraph that ends with a thesis/focus sentence, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.”…

Development Scared, nervous, and unhappy would describe how I felt about taking a college English class. English was my most dreaded subject, and always has been simply because there is not always a right answer. I like to think and view things as black and white, but English is full of digging through the grey. Never the less I walked into my first day of English 101 dreading what was to come, however I left with an open mind.…
