Wow! What a semester and now – with this finial essay – it’s over. I walked into English 111 thinking that I wasn’t going to glean much information, after all I’ve been writing in various forms for a while now. Boy was I wrong. I’ve learned how to effectively outline essays, properly cite other author’s works and overall I’ve become better with punctuation. These were all points that I struggled with as a novice write, randomly placing commas wherever, haphazardly starting a writing project without any kind of guide and not giving credit to those who deserve it. Though I’m still a novice writer, all these points have made me a better writer overall. As I continue in my novice skill set, I applied one of the most valuable skills I learned in English 111 to this essay. Outlining is quite truly a simple process. It allows for the author to write the key points they wish to address quickly and concisely. It’s kind of like a frame work that can be used to build an essay, or any other type of writing really. I was wrong. I’ve learned more than I have ever learned in any other English class this semester. This class has truly taught me how to be a better writer by applying what I’ve learned. Creating an outlines that are the frame work to a good essay are important. Outlines will keep you on topic, on task and honestly make writing a little bit easier. Proper citations not only support your own thoughts, but also credit those who have taken the time to write about a topic they’re experts in. Punctuation is what brings it all together. It lets the author guide the reader to important points, emphasis and tone. English 111 wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and certainly not as easy as I thought it would be. I truly believe that hard things are worth doing and are worth doing right. It’s where you will learn the most and grow to become better than you were

What did I have that they didn’t? I had practice writing and received more control of how to collect my ideas and organize them into a paper that allowed me to acquire worthy grades. To emphasize, I am able to collect my ideas faster due to the consistency of writing every week. This behavior has led to me to being able to manage my time more efficiently on ideas such as punctuation and even creating longer sentences that will improve my papers. Even though English 101 is a beginner writing class, it taught me how to apply those writing skills outside of the classroom walls, while helping me more than any of my other high school English classes.…

I’m not at all where I probably should be as a writer, but I feel like I have improved my writing skills. Through this English class and my amazing Professor, I have gained an appreciation for literature and have been able to write from experience rather than because I have too. My English improved dramatically through finally understanding how to put all the information I have researched into a paper. I feel more comfortable in writing my papers because I know I’m not just putting random information to fill up my word count. I met my personal writing goal more than I thought I would.…

There is always room for improvement, especially with writing. Before taking this class I thought I was a good writer, but after the first few essays I realized how much I could truly improve upon. I feel like I did a good job of integrating my research into this essay and I kept it well organized, but my biggest weakness was my grammar and punctuation. I left off commas here and there as well as used some unnecessary wording. I also had a run on sentence on page 2 that could have been avoided if I had split it up: “Now, detective fiction not only quenches a thirst for problem solving,…

Through this English 101 course I have not only grown as a writer in a technical sense but content wise as well. The first essay I wrote was a “remembered event essay”. I decided that I would just give it my best shot and see what happened. Well, when I received my graded paper, it definitely was not what I was expecting. It had what seemed to be a million negative comments on it.…

When you are taking an English class center around writing, you naturally become comfortable and begin to improve on your writing in your essays you write and the more you write them the more things you realize you need to work on. For instance, one of the biggest struggles I’ve when writing at the beginning was my grammar. I found myself always making the same mistake, but the more I wrote and the more time I spent reading I found myself improving. Another thing I improved on, was my ability to cite a paper and put in essay citations. As the semester went on, Hogan gave us resources to help and teach us more in depth on how to cite and though that I was able to…
