Starting of as a freshman at Washington State University, personality I had as much interest in English as a sheep would have an interest in being killed. I often found myself dreading having to take an English course because I hate grammar and worrying about where a semi-colon goes or if I should just put a period instead. I wondered If there was any other class I could take to count as my English credit, and that is how I landed on English 205. Later to find out that it would not count as my English 101 credit. “Nothing but sit and sit, and eat and eat!” (V.ii.12; cf14) Petruchio says this at a dinner party, so to speak, with his brother in law and father in law. He is trying to convey that there was no entertainment, that all they do is sit and eat and then sit and eat some more that the party was boring. I understand how the class is structured but I also have an understanding that I have not gained any Shakespearean knowledge since joining the class either. All we do is watch and discuss and watch and discuss without truly identifying what the underlying meaning is.
“I could teach you/how to choose right” (III.ii.10-11) Portia says this after Bassanio chooses the box, she so badly wants him to be her husband but can’t give away the secret either because of her dads wishes, that she must respect. So, tell me this what is the secret to learning Shakespeare if no one truly knows who Shakespeare is. How can we be so quick claim ourselves to be Shakespearean experts if we don’t even know if the plays had any true meaning of it they, were just a source of entertainment. To this class I say “Good sentences and well pronounced”
