able to me as an incoming freshman, I have come to the conclusion that I would like to enroll in English 100. As I looked at the characteristics in the boxes in the “Guide to Choosing the Right First-Year Writing Course” for English 100 and English 100P, I find that I fulfill almost all of the characteristics for English 100. For the reasons stated throughout this essay, I believe this course would be best suited for me in my first year as a college freshman. English 100, which is offered for three hours a week, will allow me more time to evenly apportion study opportunities for each of my classes. Although the English 100P course provides students with lab time for essays and writing samples, I would prefer to work on my own and use one …show more content…
It wasn’t just my English classes for which I was required to write an essay, but also in almost all my classes, from Honors Biology to Honors Modern U.S History, from Sociology to Shakespeare--there were papers to write. In all of these classes for which I composed an essay, I always did my best and received a grade of at least a B+. The essays I wrote were not just an assignment; I also enjoyed writing them. I was able to get down on paper my knowledge about a certain subject or topic that I wasn’t able to communicate in class. In addition, I was able to contribute ideas so that my teachers could see that I understood the material, which was one of the things I liked best about writing essays. I’ve also done some writing outside of the classroom. For example, recently my sister was married and since I was her maid of honor, she asked me to write a speech to read at her wedding reception. That was easy, in my opinion, because I do love to write. I feel that I have a way with words and those words just come to me. When I read my speech at her wedding in front of all her friends and family, there was not a dry eye in the room, which made me feel fantastic. I realized that my speech mattered and the words I composed on a blank piece of paper were important to my

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

All of those courses included analytical essays typically involving development of central themes discussed and personal analyzation. I have also taken a few other classes that required writing like Psychology and U.S. Women’s History. Those two classes were more geared…

Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing.
