My interest and purpose of pursuing a Master’s degree in Engineering Systems Management largely stems from a desire to combine engineering and managerial sciences in a more homogeneous way so that we can improve the standards of bringing technology to the masses. During my past 14 months or so with Honeywell, as I embarked upon my professional journey in the role of a design engineer for complex control systems, I realized that there is enormous potential for improving the quality of work and saving on resources. Eventually I decided that it was time I looked at the various industrial and systems engineering programs in depth and see if it fulfills my desire for an advanced degree. I joined Honeywell’s Performance Materials and technologies vertical. This strategic business unit within the Fortune 100 technology conglomerate is based in Houston and caters to various petrochemical refineries around the world. My work in the domestic sector impressed my manager who soon moved me to the global engineering services where all the global process plants are engineered. I was awarded with Honeywell’s Bravo recognition for successful completion of my first project. Soon, my manager assigned complex projects to me. In my next project, I was selected to be a part of the team for Factory Acceptance Test, one of the most important milestones in project delivery, cost and scheduling. I spent three months in Saudi Arabia for this crucial portion of the project which further honed my skills in communication, interaction and adaptation to various situations. In this customer facing role, I was working with people who had many years of work experience in this field. I also learnt to respond, assess and adjust to corporate demands and scheduling pressures and at the same time, delivering a project that was technologically advanced and safer than our competitors. Our team’s success in closing the test despite various last minute changes got me another Honeywell Bravo Bronze award – the second one in my 11 months with Honeywell. Working at a structured company, I learnt just how important management skills are. I wish to study engineering management from your prestigious university which I believe will help me make a better tomorrow. I too, just like Steve Jobs once said, want to put a ding in the universe.
