Engineering Honors Program Analysis

For most people, school is about staying on top of your class, making perfect grades, and then moving on to the next thing, with little thought of the past or future. Now I’m not here to criticize others and their methods, but to me, that all sounds like a big waste of time. Good grades are great and all, but if that’s the extent of school, then I’d rather just learn everything on my own time. I’m in it for the knowledge learned and the experiences gained; the kinds of things that will help you to react in the best way to what life has to throw at you. The best way I can see to gain this kind of practical experience and knowledge is to surround myself with other people with the same idea as me, much like the Engineering Honors program will …show more content…
Over the years of high school, I've been a part of many of the SEC’s outreach programs and I plan on becoming a part of them from the side of leadership. Events like FAME and SPARK, that have given me the opportunity in high school to discover myself; I want to provide the same for those in my same position. I plan on becoming an active member of the SEC, as well as involvement within available engineering LLP’s. With both, I will have the opportunity to assist within the college and my student body as well as without. Academically speaking, my first years will be an exploration, trying to find what kind of engineering interests me most, and shows promise. As for what I do with that degree, the plan is still coming together. I’ve always enjoyed the idea of teaching, sharing knowledge and growing others and myself. Before that, however, I want the full experience of working within my respective engineering field, another thing part of my college experience would be spent finding and building towards. I plan on taking advantage of many of the opportunities available to hone this down, events like the career fair and other circumstances that may present themselves through my journey. Being a part of the Engineering Honors program can only further my progress towards my

Suzanne Fry writes how some students “pick and choose classes cafeteria-style based on course evaluations and select those where success seems guaranteed” (Fry 10). This is true, and it brings up a problem in the educational system. Namely, what is its purpose? Many people view the purpose of education is to learn, others think it is to become a critical thinker, and still others see it as a way of getting a diploma or degree. When I sign up for classes the professors’ names are given to me, and I can then go online and find the average grade that he or she gives.…

On how many occasions does the question “When am I ever going to use this in real life?” arise in the classroom? The truth is that much of the knowledge that is acquired through a traditional classroom setting will never be put to use. Post-secondary schools often force students to take higher level classes on something completely irrelevant and extremely difficult simply because they wish to test the student’s breaking point. Kristine Cueto, a current student, affirms this notion when she states, “My general perception of the purpose of college is to obtain the degree necessary to pursue the career I'm interested in... college does give you more knowledge, but a lot of that knowledge we end up flushing because it won't help in the long run if it has nothing to do with how you execute your career” (Cueto). This is not to argue that professionals such as psychologists and astrophysicists are not intellectuals, but to highlight that “the big difference between the psychologist’s laboratory and the workplace is that in the former the problems are isolated and in the latter they are embedded in the real-time flow of work with all its messiness and social complexity” (Rose…

School is the beginning of our adventure through life. It not only teaches us the mandatory lessons needed but also ones that stick to us throughout life. Whether it was that one extraordinary teacher or the one everyone hated, students would still learn and use it to their advantage. Unfortunately, this was the mindset of teenagers/ young adult’s years ago; now the students of today aren’t understanding the value of their education and how far it can take them.…

Recently, I have received information in the mail about a new program offered at Jackson College. The information I received informed me that Jackson College is now offering an American Honors program. As we know, college expenses are increasing as the years go by. This program makes a 4-year, bachelor’s degree affordable to those who may not be able to afford it. The American Honors program is a program offered to students at Jackson College.…

Though I was not able to put all of my attention to school until junior year, I kicked it into high gear as soon as I could. Despite all my hard work, I was unable to find myself a place in the top 10%. This has hurt my appearance to colleges, but I hope that with these explanations of what I had to go through freshman and sophomore year, my position will be slightly more understandable. Engineering honors is the best thing for my future and everything I want to do with my life. Honors will help me grow as a student, so I can be a better employee and will help me grow as a person.…

Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship are the cornerstone of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors society, and a well-rounded member should be able to demonstrate proficiency in each one of them. As a senior in high school I have spent thirteen years of my life in the public school system participating in countless standardized test. My third grade year our school system began taking SOL’s, standards of learning, and it was then that education switched from what the teachers felt was important to what the government insisted we needed to know. It was then that it no longer mattered what we knew instead, all that mattered was we could fill in answers to obtain a grade of excellence. However, I may not be in the best position to complain I have had straight A’s my entire life but in reality it shows nothing more of me than the fact that I have a good memory, that is until I am done with the test. Even though I have received straight A…

In order to be a successful world class engineering student, and further enjoy your educational experience in the process, you need to be relatively self-aware. An example student would understand that learning how to slow down and analyze where they are at in various areas of personal development would be a tremendous help in succeeding in school and in the rest of life. Students who practice and work at being “good students” generally do noticeably better in school, and tend to get more out of their education. The key is to understand that the learning isn’t just in the classroom, at that they way you live outside of school has a direct impact on your education. Your time management skills, study habits, physical and mental health as well…

There is this common perception that education is what makes people successful. It is understood by most persons that you go through school, obtain your degrees, then obtain a sophisticated job that you were trained in school for. However, in my point of view education is not necessarily what gets you that job that you obtain. Education is seen as a guide for people to know where to go in life. I feel like coming from two different countries, which have different educational systems gave me two different views about education.…

Robert Kolker talks about how the school systems do not teach things worth learning, “students overwhelming expressed anger at teachers and the schools for giving them what they considered meaningless assignments that aught them nothing,” (Kolker). In most of my classes I feel like this topic comes up at least once a class, instead of thinking about my classes right now I start to stress over my college classes I am not even in. Most of my teachers emphasize on college and what we need to do to prepare for it and all the abilities we will need to be able to get into college. By doing this they talk about what we need to do and learn but do not actually implement those qualities in us. Being in high-school is nerve-racking because it determines how your life will turn out; it decides what college you go to, what career you can get into, which are all very important aspects of one’s life.…

“When one has learned the use of tools, it is easy to work at a new craft” (Emerson 104), though, as students learn, important information about how the material is relevant to the students education and their future life is continually being left out. Because schools do not prepare students for real life, encourage creativity and personal expression, and fail to supply students with a practical use for what they’re learning, schools fail to give students the ideal education; however, if the student fails to appreciate and work with the education provided to them, the failure must be placed upon the student. Though they try, schools could improve at preparing students for real life. Though they do educate students with advanced math, English,…

Throughout my education I have often wondered, through the unending parade of menial assignments and busywork, what school is for. My fellow students seems to be doing better than I was, or at least their grades showed they did. What showed up in their report cards was not really a valid way to measure students. Their grades never reflected what they took away from the classroom, the influences of their families and the community on their education, or for that matter what they were beginning to understand of the world. Thus far in this class I have come to the understanding that education is not just what goes on behind the closed doors in the school.…

I simply love academics. I put a high value on academics, as most likely I will be pursuing a PhD at some point of my life. I love learning new things, and I love that God has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge. He even commands us to do so in Proverbs 18:15, “An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge” (Prov. 18:15). This intelligence has to be well rounded, but also flooded with goals in order to become successful in an academic career.…
