Engaging Students by Using SMART Boards

“Television didn’t transform education. Neither will the internet. But it will be another tool for teachers to use in their effort to reach students in the classroom. It will also be a means by which students learn outside the classroom” (Palfrey, John) Technology is a part of our day to day lives, weather we choose to keep up with it or not, it is everywhere we turn. Technology in the classroom is a great way to keep students focused on what is being taught and not being distracted by smart phones, iPods, etc. Having technology in the classroom puts the students at an advantage. Yes it was hard to write with at first but it actually was fun using the SMART Board in class. My math teacher had a fun math game that was an application he purchased for the interactive board. There are always cons to everything in the classroom. The SMART board has some cons which I believe do not out way the pros. Your hand writing is not going to be neat and legible at first. When an educator starts using the SMART Board for the first time, be sure you do not overwhelm your students with too much information. Teachers need to learn how to work around the barriers when you first integrate technology in the classroom. Teachers will always need a backup plan. Always think through how using technology like a interactive board can make your lesson more effective to students. Think of strategies ahead of time when planning lessons just in case something goes wrong. There are hardly any problems with the SMART Board; the technical issue teachers may have problem with is connecting to the internet. That is something very minor, the internet not working could not ruin a whole lesson plan. (PanaBoard)
They are expensive but most teachers are able to get grants to pay for their SMART boards. The Upgrades are a bit expensive to have it wireless. Teachers may not be comfortable with the using the SMART Board, but there are many seminars
