Energy Drink Research Paper

Though most of society is aware of the harmful effects of alcohol, many do not realize the harm that energy drinks can play, especially when consumed alongside alcohol. Can energy drinks, which can be purchased by just about anyone, really be that dangerous? Research located in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research Journal has found that combining the consumption of energy drinks and alcohol together may in fact intensity one another, resulting in additional negative effects than one would receive drinking the two alone. This study consisted of an online survey done by 403 Australians between ages 18 to 35 who had consumed alcohol mixed with energy drinks in the last 6 months. Unfortunately, many people are guilty of drinking alcohol, and often use energy drinks are mixers, or even just have one on the side, not knowing the danger they are putting themselves in. Energy drinks are said by the market to be super energy-boosting, or even healthy, but this is far from the case. After all, caffeine has been shown to reduce headache pain, and is included in various pain medications (Hart 265). However, because this individual’s headache, dry mouth, and even drunkenness are masked by the energy drink, this may lead them to underestimate how drunk they really are. This leads the individual to drink more, unable to realize how drunk they are until it’s too late. Additionally, because energy drinks hide these symptoms, the individual may never realize the effect alcohol has on his or her body, resulting in repeated drinking behavior (Peacock).
