Enduring influence of family is a strong theme throughout the film Persepolis, directed by Marjane Satrapi. In the opening sequence, we witness Marjane reading a declaration to her grandmother stating that people must behave well, must keep their words, must do good, families must eat a chicken once a day and old women will never suffer. These are social norms which have been established by the influence of her family. Her grandmother further reinforces them with verbal praise for Marjane’s great thoughts. Furthermore, the family does not want Marjane to conform to the current regulations of the regime. She is sent away to Austria so that she will be safe and continue her current values.
