At this point in his life he had made his first exploration to the Artic with Robert Scott and saw the wealth and excitement that came along with everything. Shackleton’s plan was simple and his goals seemed achievable; however, finding funding for his journey was not as simple. After many trying attempts to raise funds, he received a considerable contribution from James Caird of $120,000, a $50,000 sum from the government, the Royal Geographical Society donated $5,000, and Dudley Docker and Miss Stancomb-Wills gave small amounts. By selling the rights to any commercial property that the journey might produce, the rights to a book he promised to write, a motion picture and a long lecture series, Shackleton was able to gather the necessary funds for rest of the voyage. With the newly acquired funds, Shackleton bought the Polaris, a sailing vessel specifically built for polar exploration. He renames the ship Endurance.
