Ender's Game Themes

In Orson Scott Card’s book Ender's Game gives his characters complex and in depth personalities to convey a variety of themes. Facts on File defines theme as a, “topic, as of a speech, discussion, book, etc.; subject.”. Card expresses many themes throughout his book such as games, isolation yields individual strength, the line between good and evil, individual needs versus the common good, individual initiative versus central planning, children versus adults. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines characteristic as, ”a special quality or appearance that makes an individual or a group different from others.”. Card gives each of his characters unique and specific characteristics through which he conveys his themes. Throughout this paper I will …show more content…
Although he is capable of causing much harm he hates that side of himself. All throughout the book, Ender is put into situations that force him to use his violent side though his efforts to resist and not use violence are admirable he always fails. All of his alias he gains while at battle school like him because of his compassionate side but they follow and trust him because of his anger and wittiness. When reading the book, some people may feel empathy towards Ender because of how he can be viewed as a victim, a child who is being manipulated by adults. Though this is not the case, Ender is very smart child who understands when people are manipulating him. While he knew this was occurring he felt that this was necessary for the betterment of the world. Many people view Ender as a child although this is not the case, he may be young but he has the mental compacting of an adult. He shows this through the way he treats Bean, the way he manipulates him. All throughout the book Ender is given control, although he does not want control, he tries to avoid causing violence like he saw others people enact. This causes him to learn that in life there are some games that you will have to play, and that losing is not an option. She was to compassionate for battle school, which is why the Wiggin family had to have a third child. Valentine loves Ender and protects him from Peter, the older abusive brother. While Ender is away at battle school Peter and her got into politics, Valentine wrote anonymous her political opinions under the name of Demosthenes. Demosthenes wrote aggressively about Russian expansion. At school, Valentine was approached by an I.F. officer and was told that Ender needed her help, she was skeptic at first but after talking for a while she was convinced to write Ender a letter which gave him hope to continue school. After battle school Ender was at a cabin where Valentine visited him and convinced him to go to command school.
