English 9 4/8/24 Your Past Doesn’t Define You Orson Scott Card’s science fiction “Ender's Game” reveals that if you were bullied, or hated before, that it does not define your future in being a genius. The main character of the book is named Ender. Ender is extremely intelligent as well as innovative, a genius. Ender is a genius because he is quick at thinking, strategic, and thoughtful, he has a wonderful blend of characteristics. However, in the beginning of the book, Ender encountered countless people along his way to the top who hated or bullied him only because of his young age, minute size, and numerous other physical factors. One time when Ender showed his genius was when he beat his bully Stilson in a fight. Page 6 of the “Ender’s Game” PDF clearly shows that Ender was thinking ahead of the game, “Ender, however, was trying to figure out a way to forestall vengeance”. To keep them from taking him in a pack tomorrow. I have to win this now, and for all time, or I'll fight it every day and it will get worse and worse.” (Card). This excerpt demonstrates Ender’s genius and use of strategy; he didn’t want to fight more, so he ended it conclusively by beating the life out of Stilson. Beating the life out of Stilson was one of Ender’s genius strategies, he wanted to scare off Stilsons goonies by demonstrating what will happen if you mess with Ender. Despite Ender being bullied by these people, he still managed to be a genius and craft a plan to absolutely annihilate Stilson. Ender didn’t let his bullies stop him from being clever and winning. Others may say that Ender is not a genius, he just got lucky. Obviously Ender’s rapid thought process is not lucky, it is strategic and intentional. Another time that Ender didn’t let his bullies define his genius was at Battle School. When Ender first went to Battle School, he was bullied because of his scrawny size. Ender was also despised because he was a quick learner and good at figuring things out, like the gravity changes. Despite Ender being bullied and despised, he still managed to shove his way to the top, as the youngest commander. On page 120 of the “Ender’s Game” PDF it shows Ender becoming a commander at an extremely young age. “Everyone expected him to go commander early. Perhaps not this early, but he had topped the standings almost continuously for three years, no one else was remotely close to him, and his evening practices had become the most prestigious group in the school.” (Card) Ender became a commander so young because he was a genius and didn’t let bullies stop him; bullies like Bernard and Bonzo who doubted Ender from the start of Battle
