Ender’s Game is surrounded by the idea that the young boy, Andrew Wiggin is on a quest to win the Final Battle between the humans and their alien enemies, the buggers. Andrew’s life has been a treacherous quest from the moment he became a Third.
Andrew, who is more commonly known as Ender, is the protagonist. Although he’s only six, Ender is wiser than most of the people he’s ever met. However, Ender finds himself in positions that cause problems with Colonel Hyrum Graff, the “director of primary training at Battle School in the Belt,”. (Ender’s Game pg.19) He had the qualities that were wanted by teachers at The Battle School. Foster writes that “a quester is just a person who goes on a quest whether or not he knows it’s a quest…someone tells our protagonist, our hero…to go somewhere and do something.” (pg.3). Ender is told by Graff that he should go to The Battle School and train. The protagonist is also defined by his morals and intelligence. For example, he’s attacked by Bonzo and Stilson. He had uses his brain and realizes what he could gain, and he uses his morals to try to prevent him from going too far. Ender is the main character and a hero, however, he also has a dark side, like his murderer-at-heart brother Peter. In Ender’s Game, there were many examples of Ender using his brain while executing aggressive actions. In the beginning, Ender “walked to Stilson’s supine body and kicked him again viciously, in the ribs.” (pg.7) Ender knew the unspoken rules of warfare but he also knew that he had to win or he would have to fight them again and again. He commits this wrongdoing but he is also kind, like his sister Valentine. He said, “The only reason I’m here is so that a bugger won’t shoot out Valentine’s eye, won’t blast her head open…the way it happens in my worst nightmares.” (Ender’s Game pg.93). He dedicates his life to protect his sister but Ender also helps others. He’s a part of an Army and still goes back and teaches the Launchies everything he learns at practice with the older kids. He fulfills his job and finishes his quest. Now that it is safe, Ender is able to be with his sister who was among the first people to come live in space. Orson Scott Card, the author of Ender’s Game has more plans for Ender, however. He gives Ender a new journey and this time he goes with his sister. Ender finds a planet that was created by the buggers. His thoughts about his Games on his desk led to the buggers building the undefeatable game. At the final stop he finds the Queen of Bugger’s last egg. Ender has been forgiven and in return he makes it his goal to find a place for the buggers to safely live again, maybe even among
