What is the Endangered Species Act? Why was the Endangered Species Act created? Why do we care for endangered species? The Endangered Species Act was made so that our native plants, animals, and fish would not go into extinction. This Act requires that Federal and State agencies provide suitable conditions for endangered and threatened species, not to jeopardize from federal activities but to protect and save our native species from extinction. In 1966 congress passed the Endangered Species Preservation Act that provides a listing of native fish and wildlife species that are endangered giving them some protection and preserving the habitats of such species. In 1969 Richard Nixon was elected president. Which he proposed the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1970 also the peregrine falcon was enlisted as an endangered species during that year. In 1972, The Environmental Protection Agency banned the usage of DDT pesticide because it hosted potential harm to humans also the chemical in DDT contributed to the peregrine falcon endangered status because the chemical thinned the eggshells of the peregrine falcon and the American bald eagle, which reduced the hatching success endangering them both.
