The foundation of the Cold War was built on several different disagreements such as the two superpowers at the time having differing opinions, the way the security of the nation should be dealt with, and the governments neglecting each others opinions. All of these disagreements escalated into the war that killed many innocent civilians. Many were injured and disabled believing that they were fighting for good reasons (Yetiv, 2003). The successful spread of these ideas was facilitated by the communications that were to a large extent transnational. The spread of the liberal ideas across the East was also facilitated by various transnational contacts. These ideas made many people as well as states in the East to abandon the conservative ideas that they held on to. This subsequently contributed to the collapse of the influence of the Soviet Union and subsequent end of the cold war (Jervis, 2006). The end of the cold war can also be attributed to the economic successes that the West was registering. The economic successes were to a large extent more appealing to many of the states that were in the East and that were under Russia an aspect that contributed to rebellion and eventual departure of many states from the coalition, collapsing USSR. This played a role in the eventual end of the cold war (Jervis, 2006). The Soviet Union invested heavily in building its defense against a probable attack from the West. Western countries also invested heavily in their defenses. The Soviet Union’s economy was negatively affected by heavy investment in the military especially healthcare where the mortality rates increased drastically. The Cold War officially ended in 1991. The result of the Cold War was that the Soviet Union fell apart in the early 1990s. The U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. had always been enemies, it was just that they came together to defeat a common enemy Nazi Germany led by Hitler. While not exactly a US "victory", it did end without Soviet domination. Each side developed weapons and made threats, but there usually wasn’t any actual fighting taking place (Jervis, 2006). The end of the cold war was a key turning point in the history of what was then the two most dominant ideologies between the East and the West.
