End Human Trafficking

Those of you who have visited my blog recently have probably noticed the countdown to February 23rd. I'm sure you all know by now that I am passionate about doing all I can to help end human trafficking. One of my favorite days of the year is the day when people all around the world mark their hands with a red X to signify their support for the End It Movement. In celebrating our Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment which outlawed slavery in the United States, we tend to forget that no law will ever completely end any crime. 27 million people are still enslaved around the world. Of those 27 million slaves, an estimated 55% are women, and 26% are children. 78% of slaves are labor slaves, 28% are sex slaves. But this doesn't just happen …show more content…
To most people the thought of human beings treated worse than animals and sold like possessions is sickening. We should be sickened. Sickened and angry enough to do something about it. Enough to talk about it, to support rehabilitation programs, to boycott companies that support the modern-day slave trade, to raise awareness, to demand our elected officials do something about …show more content…
One of the most important, practical ways to help is by raising awareness. Every year, some time in February, millions of abolitionists around the word join together and mark their hands to shine a light on modern day slavery. How can we fight an evil we don't know exists? There are thousands of good people out there who would be great warriors in this fight, but they don't even know it exists. Sticking our heads in the sand won't change anything. Edmund Burke once said, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for enough good men to do nothing.” I know a lot of people who think that a Christian's purpose in life is to hide in their closets and pray for the world, without ever going out and putting action with faith. The Bible is very clear that we should speak up for those who have no voice, comfort the hurting, heal the sick, defend the defenseless, and rescue the lost. There are very few groups of people out there with less of a voice than those caught in human trafficking. They are nameless, faceless individuals, who live and die in the shadows. We have to be their

After watching a Ted Talk that personally told the stories of modern day slaves, my heart was broken. These people are stripped of all their rights and freedom in order to work themselves to death. Whether it be poisoning by mercury digging for gold, or being trapped in a mine three hundred feet in the ground these men, women and children are desperate for change. The thematic maps created by Max Fisher illustrates the percentage of the population all around the world that are enslaved, along with the amount of slaves held in each country. Modern slavery is something I knew existed in the form of sex trafficking and unpaid workers, but I never knew the extent to which this world-wide tragedy was…

In the video titled “Kevin Bales: How to Combat Modern Slavery”, Kevin Bales states the prices traffickers put on victims and expresses what he believes we must do to help those trapped in trafficking rings and those who have freed themselves from traffickers. 27 million people are victims of human trafficking today, and the average cost of those slaves is $90 each, ranging from slaves being as expensive as $8,000 in first world countries and as cheap as $10 in third world countries. (“Kevin Bales: How to Combat Modern Slavery”). Bales covers the point that we must not buy people out of slavery. If we were to buy victims out of human trafficking, it would only encourage the trafficking business to obtain more slaves.…

Are individuals aware of the human trafficking situation going on throughout the entire planet? Do they even know what human trafficking is and how it affects not only the people involuntarily involved but every single other person as well? According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, human trafficking is defined as, “Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain” (dhs.gov, 2015). But, the most important question at stake is, “is anyone doing anything to stop this crime?” Today, South Africa is one of the countries suffering the most with this type of transnational crime affecting hundreds of thousands of lives every year.…

After watching the film, Not My life, one thing that stood out to me was the story of the woman trapped in domestic slavery right here in the United States. Throughout the years I have been exposed to sexual and labor slavery by my church and different educational presentations, but this story shocked me. Often times, I catch myself believing that horrific things only happen far away and that men are the only perpetrators. However, it is clear that cruelty and violence can be found anywhere on the globe, no matter how developed a country is, and can be inflicted by both men and women. Such was the case for Debra, a young woman trafficked from Tanzania to work just outside Washington D.C as a nanny for an economist employed by the World Bank…

Fortunately, just as abolitionists rose up to speak against the evils of slavery during the era of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, modern-day abolitionists have also decided to expose and fight against the evils proliferating the world. Political interventions have been made in an attempt to abolish modern-day slavery. Former U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, responsed to modern-day slavery by stating, “Defeating human trafficking is a great moral calling of our time” (Batstone 1). Congress has passed several pieces of legislation as well as sanctions against other nations to lessen the occurrences of human trafficking.…
