Ending Homework At
Carson Junior High

School administrators at Maria Yates saw that they were fighting a loosing battle outside their walls. Teachers were assigning homework but kids were not doing it. (Chicago Tribune Schools Lesson Plan no More homework 5/8/05 by Jo Napolitano). People have been debating the academic value of homework for over a decade. Mike Burman who teaches high school said "If students are in school 7 hours a day, what right do I have to interfere with their family time" (by giving out homework)? (NEA Today Should we abolish homework?) These are only a few of the reasons why teachers at Carson Junior High should not assign homework.

Some more problems with homework is that homework is rarely the cure for students challenged by the demands of junior high. Homework can just compound students difficulty. (Homework can thwart education by Charles Ungerleider the Globe and mail Pg A23 5/8/05). What happens when students have not mastered their homework? Students will practice mistakes over and over again, (Charles Ungerleider) and if you practice

Does this sound healthy?" "Children are not machines. They need 'down time' just like any adult." Children get on average 7 hours of sleep and if you go to school for 7 hours and have 3 hours of homework plus 7 hours of sleep you have 7 hours left. Take away 1 hour for eating, 30 min for exercise, 45 min for religious studies, 45 min for transportation, and 1 hour for after school activities and now you have 2 hours left. Getting ready for school is minus 1 more hour and now you have 1 hour for family time, music lessons, scouts, hygiene, hanging out with friends, extra study, ect.. Without homework students will have more time for hobbies, life skills and

First of all, homework causes stress on students. We may as well just spend all day at school if we are having school at home anyways. Students should go to school, work on “school” work, then come home and not do “school” work at home. This would increase the productivity and attitudes of students. I, for one, would be in a much better mood concerning school if I knew that I didn’t have to look forward to coming home to more school work.…

After reading Etta Kralovec and John Buell’s essay, “End Homework Now,” I can say that I’m of two minds about their claim that homework has questionable benefits. On one hand, I agree that homework it isn’t as imperative as some parents believe. On the other hand, I’m not sure if homework is completely unnecessary. I agree that that homework isn’t as vital as it’s thought to be, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people still believe that “If our students don't do lots of homework, their test scores will never be competitive internationally” (Kralovec, Buell).…

In his article for “The Atlantic Monthly”, Jonathan Rauch asserts that homework would have a significant impact on the quality of graduating students. His position of increasing homework and the amount of time spent studying outside of the classroom is well supported by both school administrators and an educational psychologist. Jonathan Rauch also points out that schools can make adjustments to their programs of instruction, but cannot do so without protest from either parents or the students. He shows that the children in the United States are lazy and parents could do more for them instead of relying on the school. Parents complain about how the schools instruct and when they try to change.…

If kids didn’t have to worry about getting certain assignments done for the next day, I do agree with Darter that, kids would have more time to be kids. In her article Darter refers to a study done at Duke University. The study showed that “all it does is negatively impact kids’ attitudes towards school, learning, and their parents(the homework enforcers).” This research shows, not proves, that homework does have an effect on studies ability to do well in…

or later. Unless students do not have enough time to sleep and rest, then their brains won’t function effectively. “Getting enough sleep is important for students’ health, safety, and academic performance,” Anne Wheaton, the lead author and epidemiologist in the CDC’s Division of Population Health, states, “Early school start times, however, are preventing many adolescents from getting the sleep they need. Students must get from 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night or their academic performances will be below average.” Both the CDC and the pediatricians’ group cited significant risks that come with lack of sleep, including higher rates of obesity and depression and motor-vehicle accidents among teens as well as an overall lower quality of…

My experience indicates that students get a lot of homework, but homework is needed to improve grades. The author's solution is unrealistic. Finally, students are not perfect and may actually forget to do their homework. If teachers assign too much homework, how are students supposed to keep up with all of it (“Why Your Students Don’t Do Their Homework”, pg. 1)? “I couldn’t even count how many kids just take the easy way out and disengage from the homework given at my school. They refuse to do homework and it’s lowering their grades. But I can’t blame them because I ask myself on a daily basis why I don’t just quit already and join the rest of the crown.…

There are so many reasons people are pro homework. People say “it helps them become smarter or helps them on test,” But there is a lack of evidence where it actually supports their claims, that it helps students at all especially at such a young age. with Alfie Khon “The positive effects of homework are largely mythical.”(Khon). It also seems that homework is being forced onto younger students more often than the older ones. I remember getting tons of homework in Elementary school, and not having the time to play outside, the stress, and my parents struggling to help me on problems I didn’t know.…

Homework, which is known to many as torture, doesn't actually benefit students. Believe it or not, homework is one of the main reasons of why students don't enjoy their precious time at school. School is the time where students should be learning, not at home. School is where students are taught how to act in the adult world, and by putting all of the homework assignments on them at one time will tempt some kids to drop out; therefore, worsening there chances for success in the future.
