It occurred on one of Deuce and Fade’s patrols. They heard what they called “a distress call”. They headed toward where the sound was coming from. Deuce and Fade snuck up on the organism that was making the noise and they found a brat; “a brat [that] would never be allowed outside the enclave”. Deuce “knelt by his other side, away from the jagged shard he held. He reacted then, lashing out wildly. His aim was so poor [she] didn’t even need to dodge”. Deuce said they weren’t “going to hurt” him and, in response, “he turned his face” and that was when Deuce realized the brat was “completely blind”. The brat told Deuce and Fade that he needed “to talk with [their] elders”. Though Deuce wasn’t sure this was a good idea, she decided they would take him with them. So, Fade carried the boy on his back until they got to the enclave. After returning, the lead hunter, Silk, listened to what the young child had to say about the Nassau enclave - where he had come from - and, when he was finished, Silk sentenced him to death - even though she did not outrightly say so. After Silk dismissed them, Fade took Deuce to his living
