Enchanters By Vladimir Nabokov

Today, words are everywhere. They come from novels, poems, and even blog posts on the internet, and many of these written works are good. However, writers of the best works distinguish themselves by satisfying readers in several ways. Vladimir Nabokov grades these writers using three different perspectives: the author as a storyteller, teacher, and enchanter. He also states that the best writers are the best enchanters. Good writers are storytellers who can captivate their audiences throughout their entire written works. Vladimir Nabokov defines storytellers as people who let their audience listen to an entertaining series of events at a different reality or point of view (886). Vladimir Nabokov defines an enchanter as someone with a unique writing style (887). For example, poems stimulate the reader’s senses by containing several literary devices such as personification and imagery. Being a good enchanter is the most important out of the three of Vladimir’s categories because the audience matters the most when writing. The authors of textbooks may be good teachers, but most of them write with the personality of a dumb and soulless machine. Students can hardly read most college textbooks without fatigue. In contrast, writers of first person novels have to heavily focus on personality in their words to sell well. These three perspectives Vladimir Nabokov talked about are what distinguishes good writers from average ones. They are good storytellers, teachers, and most importantly, enchanters.
