Deoria Sarvesh, 5 years old, died in 2009. Madan Madkami, 6 months old, died in 2016. Satendra Siddharth, 47 years old, died in 2012. These aren’t just statistics, but people just like us who have suffered and died from a preventable disease; Encephalitis. My name is Jarrah McLoskey, and I am an English historian specialising in disease outbreaks. My colleagues are German virologist Dr Nuria Olive, Dr Maigan Wilson from Australia, and Sarah Moore, a US public health official. We are here to inform you about this worldwide disease, and to propose a national strategy to reduce the occurrence and prevent the spread of encephalitis in Australia. 20 000 cases in the United States, 68 000 in Asia, 50 million worldwide every year. Encephalitis is a global health hazard. And of these shocking statistics, up to ⅓ of the people infected die. Encephalitis is considered an endemic in rural areas in parts of Africa, east, south, and southwest Asia, and especially China and Korea. Certain types of encephalitis can affect people of any age, although children can be affected more severely, whilst other types are more common in children. …show more content…
It often also affects the meninges (the membranous coverings of the brain and spinal cord), causing meningoencephalitis. It is the reaction of the body's immune system to infection or invasion, and is often caused by a viral infection or a reaction to a virus or foreign protein. The viruses that cause primary, or viral encephalitis can be epidemic, like Polio, or sporadic, including herpes simplex virus, type 1 (HSV-1), and mumps.
