Enactus Ryerson: A Case Study

Introduction:
The purpose of this assignment is to highlight what I learned and the personal benefits of joining and attending events hosted by Enactus Ryerson – a club centered around solving real-world social and environmental issues through entrepreneurship and direct action.
Method:
After finishing my ITM 102 lecture on Friday, September 22, a friend of mine invited me to attend Enactus’s ‘Kick Off Party,’ which was in the TRSM from 6:00-9:00. At the event, I took note of the club’s atmosphere, planned events, and networked enough to meet most Enactus members.
Key Findings: Enactus Ryerson (link to their website: http://www.enactusryerson.ca/) is a club which has achieved great success against similar clubs from other schools, notably winning regional championships at the Enactus Canada National Exposition in 2014 (Hansen, 2014). In addition, members frequently travel abroad to help encourage entrepreneurship in youth, as well as create solutions to localized humanitarian issues like clean

A long PPT presentation then ensued; however, the structure and style of presentation was engaging for all students in the room. The presentation firstly introduced all executives (ranging from the president of finance to human resources), highlighting job positions and responsibilities associated with each job. Thereafter, all the projects Enactus was currently involved in were introduced. The most notable project was the ‘Myaah’ project, led by, which aimed at improving the availability of clean drinking water in Egypt using local materials. The final product was a ceramic water filter primarily created from a combination of sawdust, sand, charcoal, and clay (“MYAAH,” n.d.). After the presentation, cake was offered, and networking followed. During this networking, I conversed with other students and members, and left after around 20 minutes of

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

When Mountain House High School was inaugurated, it lacked one of the most crucial elements of the high school experience: clubs. Eager to share my passion for business, I founded DECA to give members exposure to real world working environments, state conferences, and opportunities to present their knowledge. Success was easy to obtain as post-conference enthusiasm spread first amongst members and then the rest of the school. Because of the first year’s success, the next brought many new members who were all eager to attend the DECA state conference.…

One day in school, word spread around that a new, innovative technology was going to be introduced. Curiosity led me to attend the showing of the da Vinci surgical system. Although I did not get to perform incredible acts of surgery with the machine, I learned about its potential and made me wonder about the other creations that continue to revolutionize the world. By joining the Plan II Honors program, I hope to learn about the discoveries in our world and understand how people think. I also want to develop my critical thinking skills and gain knowledge in different fields and understand how they interconnect.…

While growing up, I was always drawn to the city and how much it has to offer. In high school, my friends and I would discuss where we wanted to end up when we graduate. Ryerson was always my first choice as I loved the different cultures and diversity, along with the fact that it is in the heart of the most significant city in Canada. I have always wanted to attend Ryerson because of their high academic reputation as well as their extra-curricular programs. Not only does Ryerson offer amazing opportunities for their students, but being in the city opens up a wide variety of job opportunities as well.…

A new journey in my life began on August 13th, 2014 as my school principal cut the red ribbon celebrating the opening of a brand new high school. Little did I know, it would become a journey of growth and unique experiences unlike any before it, further refining and adding to my inner sculpture of identity and talent. I was going to Liberty High School, therefore it was necessary that I adapt--quickly, yet strategically. Throughout my life, I had never imagined that my high school experience would reach and exceed my expectations in the way that it did. I had the unique opportunity most people don’t get in life: to be part of a grassroots movement in establishing a culture that would enrich future students with tradition and values for many years to come.…

I know that this story is gruesome, hard to hear and ultimately painful to listen to. But that’s the issue, there’s a stigma around fraternities that ‘boys will be boys’ and that this type of tragedy is bound to happen to at least one out of the thousands of men that enter a fraternity. Especially as college students, we are so used to hearing sirens go off around the weekend that we become numb to the issue at hand. People are in denial about hazing and binge drinking and excessive drug use that they naturally want to overt their gaze instead of dealing with it, which only perpetuates the problem. If we start to actually recognize the ramifications that come with being apart of a culture that this is normal in we can turn things around for the better, and maybe even save someone’s life.…

This year I learned I am the result of generations trapped in unfortunate situations that nevertheless resulted in my parents’ successful immigration to America. Living in NYC, a true polyglot society, it is easy to forget we have not always enjoyed a democratic society’s possibilities. In fact, we are surprised the USSR’s countless famines, genocides, wars, and simple violence had not killed our families decades ago. Education saved them. They realized intellectual excellence brought respect and recognition from a society that wanted them gone.…
