The first thing you will notice is the afternoon sun warm, comforting, welcomed. The warmth is offset by the cool breeze that carries the fresh sent of grass and the vibrant yellow buttercups. The grass is soft as your hands run through it, mildly damp from the mornings dew that is just starting to dry. If you listen close enough you can hear the song of birds in the distance dancing with the soft buzz of fluffy honeybees pollinating flowers as they move to collect nectar. Distantly lawnmowers shatter the calming environment built up by the shade of green leaves and grass, the swaying of white, purple, and yellow flowers, and the sounds carried out by the residence of the…

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Oyo State, Nigeria. I was home for the holidays from boarding school and enjoying an exuberant game of “tag.” Our game was made all the more exciting by its location near an abandoned well, which we were not allowed to be. Unfortunately, my excitement was short-lived as I slipped and fell into the well. There was pandemonium among my friends as I tumbled head-long into the dark waters.…

The Barn The sun is just starting to peek over the horizon, casting soft rays of light over the Earth and turning this usually chaos filled place, into a calm haven. There is not a cloud in the sky and a cool breeze rustles the leaves of the trees. I make my way towards the barn to see my horse before I head off to school.…

It was a crisp sunny morning, peering out the kitchen window I could see Blackbirds perched on frosty roof tiles, these were accompanied by steam being vented with regularity from the neighbours central heating, it was the first proper winters day we have had. The multitude of different mugs rattled away as I hastily liquidised a loaf of bread before setting about to tinker with my cheese paste mixture. The rivers were likely to still be coloured and I wanted to try and create a slight clouding effect, so whilst mixing a new batch of the blue krill paste I included a liberal helping of powdered milk, the idea being that this would leak off a creamy textured cloud and prove alluring to any inquisitive chub. A healthy flask of coffee was soon stashed away and I was eventually ready to make my way to the riverbank for a mornings chub searching. It was brilliantly sunny and it did not take long for the rod blank and eyes to start freezing up at regular intervals.…

Our arrival on the Gulf Coast was marked by the striking change over from open land and farm country to high-rise condo buildings and crowds of boats. The pleasant, little anchorage we found was flanked by greenery and a big luxurious hotel and filled with other boats. After our daily appointment with the sunset, we quickly threw the dinghy in and headed out for another visit with more of the people in Florida we wanted to visit. Our few days in Cape Coral were filled with visiting and chores; evenings of chatting and relaxing with family and days of laying in provisions and preparing for the leg of our journey that would take us across many many miles of wide open water in the Gulf of Mexico.…

I haven't had much exposure to the conversations behind death and prior to my visitation to the resident at Montgomery place, the topics behind death and dying always remained one filled with cautiousness, mystery yet beauty. In a way, death is a solemn yet majestic exoneration and culmination of a life well lived. It was understandable to have an apprehensive approach to this assignment. Although, I did I remain optimistic - having already seen elderly patients in clinics and in the hospital who were approaching the end of their lives, as well as engaging in the discussion regarding advanced care directives - this was different in the sense that I was affirming the end being in sight by actively participating in the topics behind dying.…

In mid October early in the morning the day was crisp and chill. The sun was just burning the morning fog off of the lakes cool waters. The dew on the grass and trees was glistening from the sunlight and the bird were singing their songs of jubilee . The entire woods were peaceful and still, and the sunrise was magnificent. During this moment I realized how beautiful nature is when the outside world is a distant memory, and all we need to do is take advantage of the little things life gives us and never stress the big ones too much.…
