For week three of clinicals I was assigned the pierce county fire department station 20. This rotation was my favorite so far and the most interesting to me. During my 12 hour shift the station received six calls, however, four of those calls got canceled, and we attended two calls. I followed two EMT’s during my rotation.
Things that Impressed Me
These firefighters are by far the kindest group of men I have ever met. As a whole, the station was selfless, kind, empathetic, beyond those traits they were eager to learn. Ronnie one the EMT’s I was following had been a EMT for six years already and talked about how he loves learning and practicing medicine. And how it is called practicing medicine for a reason because you are always learning and there is always room for improvement. I was in aw of the character that all these men displayed. Despite their compassion, it was also amazing going on calls and watching them in progress. The second call of the day was a 6-year-old female presenting with chest pain. It was incredible watching the crew not only on the medical side, but watching how they interact with a child. How they explain the procedures, how they try to comfort and reassure the child. This was stuff we talked about in Peds and it was amazing watching it all come together. Because of the lack of phone calls the two EMT’s

The only thing that disappointed me was at 7:15pm we received a call of multiple people at American lake under distress. The dive team was getting ready and as we headed out there the call got canceled because another station beat us there. Which I think would have been amazing experience to see a dive team rescue multiple pedestrians. Then we got a call about mental health patient which also got canceled. Then a call about an industrial fire which also go cancelled. And all this happened between 7:15 and 8:15pm. So, I was sad that I missed all the

On Thursday, August 24, 2017 I got the experience to follow Horizon Specialty Hospital of Henderson’s Wound Care Team. During this experience, I was able to witness the removal of a wound VAC (vacuum assisted closure) and surgical stitches, different methods of wound monitoring and discussed the healing process. For new admissions, the Wound Care Team does a physical examination of the body, looking for any wounds, bruises, scars, tubes and IV placements. They take pictures, measurements and note the location of the wound. Since the hospital still uses paper charting, they handwrite all of their notes and upload them to the patients' medical chart when done with their assessment.…

Officer James Smith was sentenced to death by hanging Saturday after he rescued a Jewish mother and children from certain death. Gruenberger believes that the reason Officer Smith died is that he was sympathetic, being a father himself. Janka Gruenberger and her three daughters were rescued from imminent death last week as they waited in line for the gas chamber. Janka pleaded for an officer to spare the lives of her and her three daughters. The officer accepted her plea since he had a kid of his own, and he knew how horrible it would be to lose a child.…

During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

This episode really opened my eyes to other things going on in this world. I have always lived in good neighborhoods that have never had any shootings or crimes. These kids in the episode have not only had so many shootings in their neighborhoods but they actually see these shootings, sometimes are the shooter, and they see their friends or family get shot more than anyone should. It is crazy how different of lives people can live. I have never even thought about buying a gun because I would never need it but with these kids it’s a second nature to have a gun and to know how to get one and where to hide one.…

The adoption of a mixed-methods approach was necessary to aid the interpretation of correlational findings from the initial stage of this research, which assessed WPV in terms of its consequences upon paramedics’ wellbeing; a qualitative exploration of the personal and occupational impact of perceptions of stress related problems and coping strategies used, was then integrated through focus group approaches. The theory of Perceived Control and Self-efficacy was incorporated as a guide to our theoretical framework. Predictability and control over a stressor is understood to reduce the risk of development of pathology; research suggests that when the onset of danger is unpredictable, contextual stimuli are more likely to be subsequently treated as predictors of aversive events, leading to generalized fear. Nonetheless, control over the aversive stimulus inhibits generalization…
