Clean morning sun shone through the skeleton of nails and planks, casting geometric shadows across the unsanded plank floor. The only sounds to be heard were the sweet chirping of birds and the rhythmic pounding of many hammers finishing the house. Giants bustled everywhere, one placing drywall, another laying tile, and some planting huge flowers beneath the newly painted mailbox. This was a banner week for Habitat for Humungosity (HFH), 3 homes already finished and this last one nearly done. Whoopee, we’re almost finished, thought Frederick carefully painting butterflies on the smallest child’s bedroom wall. He replayed the same charade, meekly asking for more of Gretchen’s “wonderful” food. When Gretchen asked about his disappearance the day before, he crafted a pitiable fib about needing to go home to take care of his sick mother. Gretchen impressed by his “responsibility” and “heart”, ate up all the carefully crafted lies. Departing after about an hour, Jack didn’t go back down the bean plant choosing to slink around the back to the henhouse. Having noticed the odd gold feathers sported by the hens the day before he was thrilled to find golden eggs in the nesting boxes. Grabbing a squirming, reluctant bird and eight shining eggs, he clambered back down the beanstalk.
