Carlota was born Marie Charlotte Amelie Augustine Victoire Clementine Leopoldine of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, on June 7th, 1840. Her parents were King Leopold I of the Belgians and Louise Marie d'Orleans (Mexican 2). Her mother Louise died when Carlota was only ten years old. Carlota was a smart, well-educated young girl (Mexican 4). One summer, in 1856, she met Maximilian von Hapsburg, an Austrian Archduke (Mexican 5). Carlota became extremely worried about Maximilian and Mexico (Mexican 39). She would not let her husband abdicate the throne, as she was the type to never give up (Mexican 40). Empress Eugenie helped Carlota work out a time to meet with Napoleon III. Carlota faced him, and scolded him for breaking his promise (Mexico 44). However, the stubborn man still refused, and Carlota began to fall apart (Mexican 45). She told her husband that Napoleon was possessed, and became paranoid. She would tell her coachmen to drive faster and hide behind her handkerchief, thinking a farmer was somebody out to kill her (Mexican 47). Eventually, the crazed woman began to think everyone was trying to poison her. While meeting with the Pope, Carlota leaned across the table and began to taste his hot chocolate with her fingers, stating that everything she was given was poisoned and she was extremely hungry (Maximilian 285). The Pope, although rather surprised and startled, treated her well and let her sleep in the Vatican (Maximilian 286). While visiting orphans, she was back to her normal self (Mexican 50). Unfortunately, while in a kitchen, Carlota tried to eat a piece of meat that was still cooking off the stove, but burned herself and suddenly fainted.
