A study on employment barriers facing offenders found that characteristics typically found in ex-offender can affect their ability to find employment. These characteristics include limited work experience and education, inadequate cognitive abilities, substance abuse and mental health issues. Many of these traits understandable impede an individual’s employment. For instance, many offenders lack work experience since they have spent long periods incarcerated. Incarceration inhibits ex-offenders from acquiring important job skills, positive work habits, like punctuality and connections to employers in the workplace. All these factors are stacked up against ex-offender when they attempt to reenter the workforce.
