In 2009, the peak of unemployment was at 10.0 percent of people were unemployed in the United States, the highest since the great depression (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Since 2009, the unemployment rate has steadily decreased but there are still people in need of a job. What if some people’s unemployment can be linked to their social media accounts? When most people are using social media, we tend to forget that what we post can have an effect on our lives and employers are starting to take notice of our social media profiles. Employee’s privacy of their social networks need to be respected there for employers need to have restricted access to social network accounts. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, social media can be defined as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content.” Websites classified as social media can include Facebook and Twitter, where users can posts comments, pictures, and videos, while other sites like Instagram and LinkedIn serve other major purposes such as posting photos and listings of past …show more content…
Many users do not realize that post with profanity, alcohol, and drugs all have a negative impact in which way recruiters think of them. Forty to sixty percent of post about alcohol, guns, and spelling and grammar errors make recruiters reevaluate the applicant while illegal drug references make recruiters reconsider them 83% of the time. Recruiters gain a positive feeling 65% of the time with post that demonstrate volunteering or donating to charity (Jobvite 11). Many people do not think about the effects a certain post can have whether it affects someone else but most importantly can also affect the user when they do not even realize
