There was highly employee turnover, and Ford believed that by paying the workers better that would increase their loyalty to their company so that the employees could stay longer. Also, he wanted his employees to be able to afford the car. Lastly, there was competition between car manufacturers and by paying his employees better he could retain them and not worry about them leaving for someone else.
Only those of strong character were eligible to receive the wage increase. A committee was in charge of determining if the employees’ homes reflected strong character, which involved not drinking smoking or gambling, and if you were an immigrant you needed to learn English and act American. Single women who were supporting the family were also eligible.

Since the start of his company, Ford gave good wages to his employees.
