While starting at the bottom at Tinker AFB, I had the opportunity to see many different managing techniques. Knowing that I would someday be in the position I was able to pay close attention to how fellow mechanics reacted to certain demands. I had insight on what techniques were effective and what caused more friction among the mechanics instead of what brought them together as a team. It’s a daunting task for the first-line supervisor. To meet the demands of production as well as be there on a more personal level for your employees. At times I could feel myself getting over whelmed and had to take a step back, gather myself, and surge on. I am organized and was able to implement my process to make for a smoother day. When the keys are handed over, the roster is signed over to you, and knowing that every failed attempt at a new process would solely fall on my shoulders, was a real eye opener. I am still in my mentoring program and utilize it as much as I can. I am in the Employee Supervisor Development Program as a way to maximize the resources I have available to me to aid in my success. I will always be looking for ways to expand my knowledge of the management roll. The jet engine world is externally competitive and I must have the latest and greatest training to keep an edge on my competitors. It’s also internally competitive. I know it’s a business and I am replaceable. I use this fear to motivate me to keep moving forward, to help push myself out of bed when I am on day seventeen of ten hour days without a day off, and help me be the role model to my employees that I looked for in my management while I was out on the floor. An important factor that I have to hit on is having a good support system. My wife is also working overtime with my child while I work these long days, late nights at school, or not getting to bed until she’s fast asleep as I work on homework or work projects. I have one name on my list in my mentorship program, but I will pick the brain of any well-established manager, regardless of the field he or she might work in.
