Achieving high-performance business is undoubtedly an organization’s goal. Research conducted by Armitage and Keeble Allen (2007) indicated that people management basis formed the foundation of high-performance. O’Connell (2003) believes that managerial philosophies or values espousing “employee partnership” may affect both the use of high-performance HR practices and firm performance. In doing so they have generated a growing level of interest in the conduct of employment relations. (Abbott, 2006) Though employee relations management has been paid attention to, it is still an under-researched area in Taiwan. This study was amongst one of the first attempts to compare employee relations practices of two leading companies in Taiwan in different industrial contexts. It also considers the implications of employee relations practices for management. The research contributed to the literature of comparative study of employee relations practices in Taiwan by developing a baseline and serve as the reference for future research in the same field. The data were collected primarily through interviews with the selected human resource professionals.
The researcher studied company websites and company documents which provided the information on shared values of human resources practices, in order to supplement the primary data.
As the first attempt to evaluate comparative employee relations practices of two different industrial contexts organizations in Taiwan, the researcher mainly focused on two of the selected iconic companies in high-tech and EPC industries, each has more mature and well-organized employee relations practices compared to other companies in the same industry.
