Engaging volunteers begins with organizations conducting an internal analysis to determine how and where volunteers can be utilized effectively. All successful volunteer programs must to develop roles, handbooks, policies, and procedures to reduce their risk management. Researched evidence based best practices is a technique to replicate proven engagement results. Organizations seeking to leverage volunteers must make a commitment to incorporate best practices for success. However, best practices can to slow to be spread and adopted by organizations. The American Productivity and Quality Center identified three barriers to best practice adoption which includes, a lack of best practice knowledge, motivation to adopt, and a general lack of skills to do so.

Role creation is similar to a job description because it identify the sills required to successfully execute the work. Organizations that have volunteer descriptions and roles often has an easier time attracting and training volunteers. Time is also saved by both the volunteer and the organization by not finding work. This also allows the volunteer to have a satisfactory work experience and relay their role in the organization to the community. It is true, most volunteers want to do anything that will help the cause. However, volunteers prefer to do work that has meaning to them and is appealing. Part of the recruitment process is figuring out which role matches with the prospective volunteer. If the volunteer matches well with various parts of roles, then the recruiter can suggest creating a role for that volunteer based on their interest.
