Empire Observation

The show that I used to watch for my observations was Empire. Empire is a drama about the head of a music business called “Empire”, whose three sons and wife are fighting for his throne. To begin with the family consists of the father (Lucious Lyon), Mother whose nickname is “ Cookie”, Andre (older son), Jamal (second oldest son ), and Hakeem ( youngest son). Throughout the show I saw a lot of society patterns, norms, culture jamming, and materialistic culture. Today’s society is very open and modern, and is influenced by technology and media. The way they influence us can affect our values, and norms as we try to fit in and not be different.
The characters on Empire very much give a misleading impression of real people.

There was one song that Jamal sang which was about black lives matter too. I also noticed how Cookie struggled to keep her family together, in today’s society we see a lot of single moms who work hard to maintain their family in a good position either, financially, or maintain good values. Single moms are not such a big controversy as it was before, that is due to how opening and accepting this generation is. Gays on the other hand are not fully accepted today and still cause some controversy. Lucious was disappointed at Jamal when he discovered he was gay, he referred to him as a disgrace. Lucious would try to hide his son’s real sexuality preference because kids are like the reflection of their parents, him being an important public figure could have affected him in his business. Inner racial marriage between a wealthy black man and a white woman was controversial in this show. The wife had to prove herself to the family, that she wasn’t with Andre for his money. This reminds me of when woman use to go to college to find a husband. Today women have the sense of becoming independent and aren’t reliant on …show more content…
We want to be in shape like the characters, or we want a boyfriend/girlfriend to look like them. Media brings our expectations high that if you don’t dress, talk, dance or do anything that is trending, then you are not cool and people are “too cool for you”. Media misleads what society must look like: muscular, toned, big butts, and this creates cultural jamming. We all want that happy ever after, but it’s not true, it only occurs in media. In Empire Lucious has to fight his morals for his gay son. Lucisoius is very prideful of his son’s because he doesn’t want a bad reputation for his prestigious name. Material culture is more important to Lucious, and Cookie cares about both nonmaterialistic and materialistic, she cares about her son’s wealth. The family as a whole were part of the materialistic culture because they had all the new things like, technology, sports car, etc. The Lyon family wasn’t rich all of the time, they were once poor. So now that they’re so rich they’re way of fitting in was buy getting all cool stuff and fitting in. The show brought up many topics that trend today, some are not fully accepted, and other topics are forming controversies. Media has advantages and disadvantages, it can help to easily communicate, but it also promotes false advertising. False advertising betrays what life really is like—it’s not real. Instead of being content with who we are, or what we have,

A Colonized State of Mind One cannot truly understand the present unless they take the past into account. Having read the introduction and first chapter of Juan Gonzalez’s Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America, one can piece together some interesting points about the early history of Latinos, as well as the colonization that occurred several hundred years ago. Upon analyzing the early stages of the Spanish conquests and considering the social issues Latinos faced throughout history, one can draw the conclusion that the colonization of the indigenous people is what predetermined Latinos’ place within society. Because these colonists’ unceasing efforts to spread their religion and reinvent the indigenous people of the americas,…

As I was binge-watching Seinfeld on Netflix over the weekend, I came across a lot of different sociological issues and situations. It then occurred to me that you could take almost any TV show or movie and find examples of different sociological patterns, or norms, for example, as I was talking about with Seinfeld, thinking its just a classic 90’s sitcom that is suppose to be funny, but has no substance, but in actuality it shows plenty of social norms in behavior, and interactions with others in a society. To be specific, in one of the episodes titled “Parallel parking” it was all about what kind of norms were accepted for parking in the city. This episode is one big argument between the two main guys fighting about the various norms related…

Argumentative Essay - Artifice “The most essential skill in political theater and a consumer culture is artifice. Political leaders, who use the tools of mass propaganda to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest,” Chris Hedges states, in “Empire of Illusion.” Based on that, the author is trying to convince his readers that publically, when people advertise for themselves or other things, false information could be thrown out there. This is a problem because when people are advertising, the audience would like to know all about what’s being advertised.…

As the power of the media grows, so does its effects on daily life and social behavior. Although some of the effects do benefit society as a whole, many do the exact opposite. One such capability of media is its ability to flood the population with a constant flow of images.
