Chapter One: We Honestly Weren’t Ready For Any Of This :/ Our world is slowly being torn apart. Our world is crumbling away. Soon we won't have anything left; no one will have anything left.

200 years ago, Earth was hit with a 14.0 magnitude earthquake. No one thought it was possible, no one was prepared. More than half the population died that day. The ones that did survive though, were forced to face what was left of the dead planet. North America was split into five islands, Europe was split into 16 islands, Asia was split into 18 islands, Australia caved in and went under water completely, both the Arctics broke away and turned into massive ice caps with widths and lengths of more than a mile. South America and Africa both gave

Twenty people are chosen every year to go out in an unexplored island and survive for a certain number of nights. Ruby and I trusted each other during the training and we both survived. We've been inseparable ever since. Ruby immediately introduced me to Git and we became the 'Three Musket-fears' or whatever that saying was.

Our island is the biggest and the most civilized. We trade with the smaller islands for all of the island's benefit. It's all just one big chain, one wrong move and the chain could break, screwing up the trust of the three islands and possibly starting a war. All that responsibility and trust is in the government, i could never be an official, too much stress.

We start running to the beach, where all of the inaugurations happen. When we get there, it's over and Git is standing with the President, probably talking about politics. Git made history, he's the only 19 year old to be in the government and to him it's a pretty big deal.

Ruby takes my hand and drags me to the shore, obviously ignoring Git as he trys to get our attention. Ruby picks up a stone and throws it into the sea. An individual has a higher chance of getting hit by an asteroid (1 in 700,000) in their lifetime, than they have winning the Powerball (1 in 185,000,000). However, it is still very unlikely, that such an event will happen during our time on Earth. After all, there are between 1.1 and 1.9 million asteroids in the Asteroid Belt, between Mars and Jupiter (“Asteroids: In Depth” 2). Who is to say one of those massive asteroids will not go on a collision course with Earth, and cause another extinction-level event, like the one around 66 million years ago, that wiped the dinosaurs off the face of the Earth?…

Recently I have read your presentation, “Island Civilization: A Vision for Human Occupancy of Earth in the Fourth Millennium” that was to the Simon Fraser Institute for the Humanities on October 16, 2008, and I must say that it is indeed extremely intriguing to be able to have Island Civilization. Out of the four possible scenarios that you mentioned in your presentation, which was wasteland scenario, garden scenario, future primitive, and Island Civilization, I think that Island Civilization will be the one that will allow the human species to survive and not become extinct. However, Island Civilization would be the hardest of the four scenarios to achieve due to the fact that it requires everyone to sacrifice something that is incredibly important to them, their freedom. In your presentation you stated that wilderness is “a state of mind, a perception, rather than a…

The first half of the twentieth century gave rise to the independence and decolonization of the British Caribbean territories, which was largely made possible due to the independence awarded following the Haitian Revolution in 1804. When Haiti’s thirteen year rebellion finally culminated in its recognition as a separate, sovereign country, this became the catalyst for revolution throughout the region, included North and Latin America. Slavery would be officially abolished in the British Colonies in 1834 through the passing of the British Slavery Abolition Act, with France following suit in regards to their respective territories in 1848. The Haitian Revolution was led by Toussaint L’Ouverture, whose skill in guerrilla warfare and military tactics led to many victories. His lieutenant, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, was responsible for expelling Napoleon in 1803 and preventing the reinstitution of slavery in the colony, which had technically been originally abolished in the northern region of then Saint Domingue in 1793.…
