Empire Island: A Narrative Fiction

His pace was brisk. Cold, mean eyes scanning the familiar environment before him, seeking irregularities in the long shadows of the dawning sun. Yet not a creature stirred nor a person was in sight, in this once bustling city. This was evident to the increase in rumours concerning the epidemic’s after effects, he presumed. His muffled breath escaped the white respirator mask covering his mouth into the chilling morning breeze, and his slim, dark suit allowed him to slip away unnoticed into the shady side street where his destination lay. He allowed a final chill to sweep over him before entering the heated, stuffy building and heard the regular bell chime as he swung the door open. Nothing unusual.

Yesterday, I took my girls to Kings Island, something that has kept them well busy over the summer. I am not the one to ride rides let alone big roller coasters. I usually am the bag holder while I sit and wait when they jump from one ride to the next. Usually I stand off to the side or find an empty bench, pop out my phone and keep to myself. But I thought this time it would be the perfect opportunity to break the norm and allow me to complete this assignment.…

Moving On Many people have a tendency to forget that poetry and music go hand in hand. They are both forms of expression and what one poem says can reflect a song playing on the radio. An example of this would be “Leaving the Island” by Linda Pastan and “It’s Time” written and performed by Imagine Dragons.
