Farr, Richard. (2008). Emperor of ice: A true story of disaster and survival in the Antarctica, 1910-13. New York, NY: Farrar, Strauss and Girroux. Apsley George Benet Cherry-Garrand has his dream fulfilled in becoming an explorer, when he joins Captain Falcon Scott on a journey to Antarctica. In the spring of 1910, Tera Nova begins the journey. It is more than an expedition; the journey is a struggle for life. Even when the temperature is -77°F and the killer whales are attacking, “Cherry” and two other crew members are on their way to collect Emperor penguin eggs. The explorers are willing to risk their lives in order to advance the science. This is a nonfiction/information book because it “focuses on facts and information” (p.272).
