DB 1 “Innocent Amusements” Hartman’s analysis of the “precariousness of empathy” performs as preparation for her examination of how whites have often hijacked the black experience for pleasure, both as an instrument of empathy and with nefarious intentions. This subjection of the black experience for white pleasure is evidenced by minstrel shows that reinforce black subjugation (29), observations made by whites of black “merriment” as somehow describing the slave perspective (34), and the characterizations of the slave as a commodity that wants to be bought (38). After reading this, I began to think about parallels to today. Is the black experience still only legitimized and occupied when recognized by the white dominion? If so, this historical…

Dre is displaying a theory application of STIMULATION THEORY OF EMPATHY. Stimulation theory of empathy happens when we see another person experiencing an emotion, we "simulate" or represent that same emotion in ourselves so we can know firsthand what it feels like. This happened in the clip when Dre realized the emotional tension that his wife, Bow, was displaying. She felt like the work she did was a lot and it was under appreciated and went unnoticed by everyone; especially Dre.…

Hartman’s utilization of the white abolitionist John Rankin’s admonishment of slavery through imagining himself and his family as enslaved demonstrates how it actually “inadvertently confirms the expectations and desires definitive of the relations of chattel slavery” (Hartman 19). Hartman recognizes Rankin’s intentions as well-meaning, but argues, “the effort the counteract the commonplace callousness to black suffering requires that the white body be positioned in the place of the black body…” (Hartman 19). This analysis of the “precariousness of empathy” acts as preparation for Hartman’s examination of how whites have often hijacked the black experience for pleasure, both as an instrument of empathy and with nefarious intentions. Aspects of empathy, such as emotional contagion, have also been demonstrated in pri- mates. In a classical study monkeys can acquire fear of snakes after watching other monkeys’ fearful interactions with snakes, without any personal experience [10]. Also, an experiment in which peripheral skin temperature was measured in chimpanzees while they viewed an emotionally laden video demonstrated a decrease of skin temperature, indicative of sympathetic arousal, when they viewed videos of conspecifics injected with needles or videos of the needles themselves [33]. However, it has to be pointed out that, on the contrary to what happens in rodents, in primates facial expressions have a crucial role in comunication within groups [34].…

I thought your analysis of this topic to be very compelling. I definitely agree with the points made about the decline in empathy. I too believe that it is highly unlikely that video games even violent ones would play a part into the disconnection with others. Social Media on the other hand does play a part in the disconnect of college aged individual. It causes these individuals to be disconnected from others I think because they are not interacting in person as much as they used too.…

Journal 1 (A situation that I shared empathy with another person and how it worked out) Today, in another one of my classes, we received our marks of our midterms that we had written a couple of weeks ago. As the teacher was handing them back, I was really nervous and afraid of the mark I’d receive, because I did not feel confident with how the exam had gone. The teacher finally handed mine back and I was so relieved and happy; I had passes the exam. My friend sitting next to me then received her exam back and she looked devastated. She turned to me and asked how I did and when I responded that I had passed, she seemed a little embarrassed; she had failed the exam miserably.…
