In Roman Krznaric’s article, Empathy and Climate Change, Krznaric talks about the disasters caused by climate change in India. Throughout the world, there are many countries deeply affected by the subject of climate change. The concept of climate change according to NASA is defined as “a change in the typical or average weather of a region or city.” However, climate change is also a change in earth’s overall climate (NASA). Varying changes in temperature and precipitation patterns is a result of climate change. The concern of climate change in today’s society is exceedingly increasing, solely due to the fact that it harms specific region’s peoples and places. Texas is one of the states who is deeply affected and has multiple tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires. On August 17th, South Texas experienced one of the serverist major hurricane since 1970. Hurricane Harvey was evolved from a tropical wave emerged from the African coast. Eventually it formed into a tropical storm with heavy rain and hard winds. Hurricane Harvey took over all of South Texas and spreaded towards the Gulf of Mexico. With winds reaching up to 130 mph there was two feet of rainfall within 24 hours on the hurricane that caused damages to houses, schools, factories, automobiles and refineries. Texas was also the nation’s number one gasoline producing state which was affected harshly by the hurricane. This was super devastating to the 6.6 million residents living in the Houston metro area. As of September 5, 2017, Hurricane Harvey damaged 203,000 homes, of which 12,700 were destroyed (The Balance). Reports show that Hurricane Harvey caused over 180 Billion dollars in damages! It affected over 13 million people through Texas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana and killing 82 people. The effects of Hurricane Harvey were disastrous to the environment, the land and most importantly the people that experienced it. …show more content…
NASA is one of the companies studying climate change by having satellites observe Earth’s land, air, water and ice. This helps learn the past and present of the Earth’s climate while also being able to predict future climate. The United States along with many other countries are trying to reduce and limit the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to try and prevent climate change.
